Synopsis

Jim Jarmusch has consistently wowed audiences with his truly distinctive cinematic vision. Shot over the course of a 17-year-period, COFFEE AND CIGARETTES proves once again that Jarmusch is a true original. This time around, the director tries his hand at the short film genre, delivering 11 shorts that are all based around the seemingly insignificant acts of drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. In the first short, Strange to Meet You, Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni discuss the perks of cigarettes and coffee. In Somewhere in California, Iggy Pop nervously tries to befriend Tom Waits, who decides that he can have a cigarette because he just quit. Cate Blanchett delivers a towering dual-role performance in Cousins, playing both her Hollywood superstar self as well as her bitter cousin. In a similarly titled yet totally different short, Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan are brilliant in Cousins

Funny, beautifully filmed in black and white, and a little eccentric. Don't expect plot, it's a quiet pondering film with no real direction. The point isn't where it takes you but to enjoy travelling with it. It may not convert anyone who isn't already a Jarmusch fan but it should entertain arthouse and indie enthusiasts.
Definitely worth buying if only for the conversation between Tom Waits and Iggy Pop.

Not being a big film person, I had no idea whatsoever to expect from "Coffee and Cigarettes." However, after the very first scene I knew I was going to love this movie.

Extremely arty and beautifully filmed, this DVD follows several conversations between groups of people which, although are completely unrelated, all share the common interest - Coffee and Cigarettes. In some cases the conversations go absolutely nowhere, and the setting changes only very slightly from scene to scene. So, if you're looking for some thrilling, emotional drama, with various beautiful film locations, this may not be the film for you.

It's funny, artistic, minimalistic, and left me spell-bound. OH, and the cast are FANTASTIC!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Yes, it's a bit weird. OK, so it's not a mainstream film but then many of JJs film's aren't that mainstream. The vignettes are intricate, amusing and fascinating and often leave you wondering whether they are completely scripted or totally off-the-cuff or somewhere in between.

They have this mesmerising effect of making you feel like you are prying on the private lives of the characters in the film. Since some of them are stars in their own (non-Hollywood) right, such as Iggy Pop / Tom Waits / The White Stripes / RZA / GZA, it's as if they are giving us an insight into what they are really like when they are off stage that acting out the scenes can't quite hide.

I particularly liked the Cate Blanchett and Cate Blanchett cousins scene - I really did think they were different people for a long while. Bill Murray was brilliant and I still chuckle at Tom Waits' petulant "So you think I need drumming lessons?" to Iggy. And the Steve Coogan / Alfred Molena interlude was hilarious.

In short, it's a great film with no explosions. Put the kettle on , light a ciggy and quit griping about it being in black and white.
