Having been blown away by Arve Henriksen's (one half of food) Chiaroscuro album, I went on to buy Strojn and Sakuteiki, and to be a little disappointed by them. Admittedly, this was largely down to the sheer brilliance of Chiaroscuro - neither Strojn or Sakuteiki are bad albums.
However, I continued my search for Arve records and found Supersilent and Food - two groups that he is a part of. Of the two, Food is more similar to his solo output. We have the same piercing trumpet, and the soft trembling undertones of Chiaroscuro. This is quite a short album, coming in at about 39 minutes, but brevity does not prevent its beauty shining through. It is much more the prequel to Chiarascuro that I expected, as it has a lot more in common with it that the very bare Sakuteiki, yet is not just a carbon copy of it.
Any fans of Rune Grammofon and Norweigan Jazz should buy this immediately.

The combination of Arve Henrikson and Ian Ballamy has to be one of the most successful trumpet and saxophone combinations I have heard. It is not Miles and Coltrane. Infinitely more expansive and elusive. Truly 21st Century Jazz.
