Synopsis
It is the turn of the century, and the TARDIS materialises by a lighthouse on the desolate isle of Fang Rock. When the engineer dies in mysterious circumstances, the remaining crew blame the mythical Beast of Fang Rock - until the Doctor and Leela turn up...

When a small clippper runs aground on the crags of Fang Rock the lighthouse offers shelter to its desperate passengers. But the Doctor soon discovers clues that suggest that no one is safe on the tiny island. Whilst a private drama unfolds between the survivors of the wrecked clipper, another death occurs. The Doctor suspects a ruthless alien lurks in the thick unnatural fog around the island and secures the lighthouse. But has he really locked the horror out, or is it somewhere inside with them...?

A moody and atmospheric late 70s classic, and notably the only Doctor Who serial to date to be set in Edwardian England. Forget about the poor special effects; if you're any kind of fan of the 'classic' series you'll know what to expect - as a 4 year old in 1977 I was terrified, and the green slimy alien has stayed in my mind ever since.
The claustrophobic feel in the lighthouse is intense and absolutely terrific, whilst the zombie lighthouse keeper, Reuben, stalking the tower electrocuting people, is a series high point.
Overall this is class Tom Baker led Doctor Who and if you've never seen it I urge you to do so!

The Horror Of The Fang Rock, was the first story to feature Graham Williams as Producer, but in terms of style and atmosphere it is more like an adventure from the Philip Hinchcliffe, generally regarded as the peak period for the show by many fans. Although the Williams would descend more heavily into comedy, to the dismay of some followers of the series, it is a kept to a mininium here. Featuring a group of people isolated in a lighthouse, whilst been killed off one by one, by an unknown killer, this story is one of the best, and well worth seeing. Tom Baker is as usual on top form, as are Louise Jameson and the guest actors.

As a child I found Horror of Fang Rock to be pant-wettingly scary, and it still packs quite a punch today. It really is one of the most chilling and atmospheric stories in the show's history and it has aged very well indeed with only the green blobby jelly monster looking a little silly. The sets for the lighthouse are absolutely superb, and if you didn't know you'd think the whole thing really was filmed in a genuine lighthouse. The look of the story has an utterly authentic period feel, and the performances from all the cast are uniformly excellent. Tom Baker dominates the story with an unusually grim and sombre performance and Louise Jameson gives her best ever performance as companion Leela. This is the sort of story that Doctor Who does better than any other show, there is a real sense of palpable menace and brooding claustrophobia to it, the remote isolated setting is brilliantly evocative, the sets, costumes acting, music and direction are all faultless....This really is Doctor Who at it's very best. Without doubt an essential addition to any Doctor Who fan's collection. Best watched with the ligts off on a cold winter's night for full effect - 10/10.
