Anyone who knows Marianne Segal's other project Jade who made the classic UK Folk rock album "Fly On Strangewings" in 1970 will have an inkling as to the quality of this release. In much the same way that Jade had a dash of Sandy Denny Fairport about them Paper Flowers has the feel of Sandy Denny era Strawbs featuring upbeat folky melodies but with a swinging London pop backing. The fabulous title track is alone worth the price of purchase and whilst this album is really a collection of previously unreleased recordings (it did not come out in the 60's) its hangs together as an album in its own right. Dave and Marianne's harmonies came to blossom on the Jade album, so here is an opportunity to see how they germinated. This vinly release comes in a stunning hard card gatefold sleeve but is shorter than the CD version.

I bought this after hearing the Jade album these fine musicians produced a couple of years later. This is charming stuff; beautiful vocals, which in places some a little like The Carpenters, but very British, and strong playing. There are some covers, Dylan's Percy's Song (later done by Fairport on Unhalfbricking) and I think it's going to rain today by Randy Newman. It can be slightly similar in places, but the title track is excellent and if you fell for Marianne Segal's voice, then this is a must.
