Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
It's been a long while coming and the world is a very different place, but there's something remarkably timely about You Are the Quarry, the album that marks the return of Manchester's most famous miserablist to the pop arena. And be assured, this biting, lyrically ambiguous collection of songs is pop through and through, albeit pop with its heart on hold and its loins full of unrequited lust.

"America" is typical Morrissey vitriol, a big, contentious opener that slams you in the jaw with a critical knuckleduster lyric. It's strange though that somebody now resident in LA should take a swipe at a country "where a president is never black, female or gay". Even odder, for this normally purist rocker, is the suggestion of a breakbeat (think George Michael rather than George Clinton) and almost--gasp--funky guitars. Elsewhere, bass and drums are pushed upfront in that swaggering Moz style, although "I Have Forgiven Jesus" is welcomingly reflective and nostalgic. "The World is Full of Crashing Bores" is another highlight and a caustic comment on the curse of Pop Idol culture, but the best track here, "You Know I Couldn't Last", is what the people really want. Both melancholy and euphoric in equal measure, it's a fine reminder of why hit-and-miss Morrissey is still so revered. Welcome back misery guts; all is forgiven. --Paul Tierney

Description
The former Smiths frontman's seventh solo album follows on from 1997's 'Malajusted'. Lyric-wise, Morrissey is as socio-political as ever with titles such as 'America Is Not The World' and 'I Have Forgiven Jesus', but the album is balanced with lovelorn tracks such as 'I Like You' and 'Let Me Kiss You'. The single, 'Irish Blood English Heart', is also included. This special edition features a bonus disc containing extra tracks, live performances and a video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth getting for the b-sides., 26 Jun 2005
It seems these days, and it's the same with DVD's, if you are a fan and buy something on the day of release, within six months you will be faced with some kind of special edition which may be so tempting you are inclined to buy the same thing twice.
I have been fleeced like this a few times with my favourite artistes bringing out an expanded CD of an album I already have, but if you don't have the b-side tracks contained on disc 2 of this release, it really is a worthwhile purchase for any Morrissey fan.
Some of the tracks are as good as - in some cases better - than anything found on the album itself. In particular: "Munich Air Disaster 1958", "Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice" and "Friday Mourning", all of which have featured in his recent live sets.
These nine tracks are like having another brand new Moz album and really are worth it. There is also some CD rom stuff on the disc - live appearances on a US chat show and a photo gallery - which are worthwhile too.
The actual album, is of course, one of Morrissey's finest. If you don't already have it, this is this version to get. If you have already got it and are a big fan, these extra tracks really are worth hearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album - expanded version, 23 Nov 2004
While the issuing of this 'deluxe edition' may be questionable given that many fans will have most of the extras, you can't fault he music. The album itself is here coupled with a bonus disc which contains all the single 'B sides' so far - and they're excellent. "The Never Played Symphonies" is better than anything on the album itself and "Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice" is fastly beoming a firm fan favourite. Its also good to have "Mexico" and the superb "Teenage Dad on his Estate" on CD format rather than just on the DVD single of "First of the Gang to Die". Also included on the bonus disc here is a CD rom section of videos, live performances & photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comeback of the Year: 2004, 15 April 2005
By Greg Farefield-Rose (Hertfordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

The comeback of 2004! After several years amazingly without a record deal, Morrissey re-emerged with a bang. Amidst more promotion than he has done for years, he came back with You Are The Quarry, his best album for a long time. But have the years of indifference and neglect increased his bile against the masses who have ignored his perceived genius?

Yes, they sure have! On How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel he rants against the judge who called him an unreliable witness in the Mike Joyce royalties case with the sort of petulance only he can get away with. Elsewhere his singing and lyrics are on top form, covering different subjects in different ways than anyone else as is evident in America Is Not The World and the superb comeback single Irish Blood, English Heart. Despite living in the US, Morrissey still clearly loves (his mythical idea of) England as is clear in Irish Blood... and the excellent Come Back To Camden.

His lyrics still have plenty of wit too. The First Of The Gang To Die combines his dubious fascination with the criminal underworld with a hilarious lyrical coda. Who ever heard of a criminal called Hector anyway?

The First Of The Gang... is one of the musical highlights of You Are The Quarry. As well as praise for Morrissey, his rather scary looking band should also be congratulated for providing their best music in years in backing their singer. Another musical highlight is the moving ballad I'm Not Sorry which has a nice woodwind arrangement.

Although it tails off slightly towards the end, You Are The Quarry is an excellent album, fully deserving its comeback of the year status. The difference between this and previous releases is that Morrissey sounds like he really means it and is hungry to make up for lost time. Welcome back Mozza.
