Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The new DTR 500 Freeview digital terrestrial television receiver from Philips offers numerous innovative features, including, among others, digital picture quality, fast channel scan, seven-day Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and automatic program list update. The unique styling and compactness (only 25 x 4 x 15 cm) ensure an optimal match with today's home décor.

Interference caused by a number of electrical sources like tramcars, electric trains and some household appliances is a common cause of picture distortion with terrestrial TV reception, and noticeable towards the edge of the screen. This problem is eliminated in the DTR 500 through the use of Philips' 'Killer Pulse Chip', which suppresses impulsive interference.

The DTR 500 gives access to Freeview channels with MHEG enhanced interactive applications such as quiz participation, games and homeshopping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Set Top Box, 20 Dec 2004
By D. Darkins - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I got one of these set top boxes for my room in my uni, which is in a really weak reception area. I get a really good picture all the time, compared to my friend in the same house who gets a really weak picture with his cheap set top box.

Its got a really good lay out, I especially liked the favourites list where you can choose your own lists and easily switching between radio and tv.

Best set top box I have had and I have had a few.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good picture quality... but Sloooww, 8 Feb 2005
    By A Customer
This is a very decent, good looking Freeview box. There is no option for TopUp TV but the quality of the signal is great. The connections out of the box are great, 2+Scart + Digital Audio etc. The biggest fault of this box is that it can be slow at times. On most occassions it is fine but now and again it will slow to a halt. You'll be pressing buttons on the remote and the box will not respond. When it does respond it will have queued up all the commands that you've sent and then start executing them all in one go... not ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Box of delights but needs resetting so often, 16 Feb 2005

    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I bought this 'Freeview' digital receiver on the strength of the manufacturers name, and i was not left wanting. With the device is a slim volume of operating instructions, which shows how simple this unit is to operate.

When i was 'plumbing it in', i was confused as i have 2 'Scart' sockets on our television, but i have a seperate DVD, Video and this receiver to connect up. The manual, if you have a bit of common sense, shows the answer to this dilemma, but it took a while to realise that you connect the 'scart' cables to 'the output of one device to the input of another' devices.

Once the device was turned on, it 'auto-tuned' to the radio and tv tranmissions, and i was soon looking a quite a few stations. We are not far from the transmitter, and the digital receiver said we have 'excellent reception', which was good to hear.

When it was set up, the picture quality of digital transmission was noticeably better than terrestial quality broadcasting. There are two methods to look at stations, each different by the amount of information it reveals; one has a TV guide to select stations by what is on, or to scroll through a list of channels and select which you want.

[UPDATE] I am now wiser to the problems with this device. Every 6 weeks or so i need to reinstall services as it 'freezes' when digital text is non-forth coming. the best way is to pull the mains plug out, wait 20 seconds and reconnect and re-install. You will require the code number (0711) on mine to re-install services.

You can look at programs in advance, go to the top and click on the slider and press the arrow keys on the handset left or right.
