Product Description

Album Description

The Little Prince is a masterpiece of children's literature. Since it's publication in 1945 the book has been translated into over 20 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. Now the BBC presents a magical children's operatic screen adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupry’s 'Little Prince', with music by Rachel Portman and starring Sir Willard White, Aled Jones and Lesley Garret and introducing Joseph McManners as The Little Prince. Available on both CD and DVD.

About the Artist

Joseph McManners - The Little Prince. It has been a whirlwind year for Joseph McManners. As it started, he was working his way through Year 6 at his local village school, enjoying his favourite subjects maths and science, and mucking about building camps with his brother William and climbing the ridge at the back of his parent’s house in Kent. It will end with a starring role in a major BBC TV production and a debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. What happened?

With a mop of golden hair and an expressive face which carries a thoughtful look as he considers your questions, it’s easy to see how the BBC and director Francesca Zambello chose him as Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince. He endured a long audition process as 25,000 children sang, danced and were whittled down to 100s, 10s, 9, 3 and finally 1.

It’s a secret he’s had to carry around with him all year, right through the rehearsal weeks in London, recording the album at Abbey Road Studios and the filming process which took him away from the first few weeks at his new school. He had tutors to make sure that he didn’t fall behind with his schoolwork, and rather fittingly they taught him about "stars and where the planets are" – perfect material for the Little Prince.

Joseph had gained a taste for greasepaint when he’d played a gangster in Bugsy Malone at school. In April this year, he was chosen to star in Oliver! opposite the original Fagin, Ron Moody, at The Marlow Theatre in Canterbury, and it was around this time that he and his mother heard about the BBC talent search on the radio. He’s since discovered that he’s perfectly at home in front of the camera, and wants to go further with his acting and singing.

Opera can be a seen as a serious business, but that isn’t how Joseph sees it "Opera is fun. It’s exciting – everything is larger than life". Internationally acclaimed opera director Francesca Zambello is "brilliant, amazing. She’s so direct, you always know where you are." He met his fellow stars at Abbey Road studios - serious conversations with Aled Jones ("we talked about what we had to do – very professional"), Willard White and Lesley Garrett ("I didn’t know which eyes to look at" – you have to see the costume to appreciate the dilemma).

Joseph’s mum is a doctor and author of ‘The Holistic Doctor’ – Joseph has grown up with an awareness of what’s good for him, but like all little boys he’s more than happy to ignore it. Dad’s a defence specialist, writer, journalist and all-round tough guy, and they’ve all enjoyed an idyllic lifestyle tucked away in their house in the woods. A solid base which will help Joseph cope with life in the limelight.
