This is really top stuff. Rachel Podger and Gary Cooper make these Mozart sonatas things of real joy, passion and beauty and they bring a real energy to them which gets right inside you. The disc is a generous 77 minutes long and when I first played it I thought that after hearing three of the four sonatas on it I'd give it a rest and listen to the last one later. Four Mozart Violin Sonatas in a row is a lot, after all; but I let the Allegro of K378 begin, and I couldn't tear myself away. They are that good.

In general, I'm not a big fan of the fortepiano but here it sounds just right. The balance and blend with Podger's beautiful baroque violin is perfect, and it's clear why they are billed as Sonatas For Keyboard And Violin, with the two instruments working in excellent partnership, each taking the lead as appropriate - a fact not reflected in the cover design, by the way. It most unfairly shows a clear close-up of Podger, and a distant, out-of-focus Cooper in the background. Rachel Podger may be the star name (and she's earned it, too), but this is a genuine partnership of equals in music, and it should be reflected in the design, I think

I have the set that Grumiaux and Klien recorded for Philips in the early 80s. I love Grumiaux's playing, and have a lot of his recordings, which I treasure. However, the Podger/Cooper disc seems to me to eclipse the older versions for sheer verve, tenderness and beauty of sound.

One gripe I have is that, on my disc anyway, it sounds throughout as though someone is hoovering the carpet just outside the door. It's not overpowering, but it's very irritating, and mars an otherwise flawless disc. Notwithstanding that, I'm off to get Volumes 2 and 3 which are already out, and I'm looking forward hugely to the remainder of the set.

Very highly recommended indeed.
