Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For the cognoscenti of the gaming world Mr Driller is one of the most eagerly awaited launch titles for the Nintendo DS. Although not particularly well known in the West, the Mr Driller series is regarded as the best new arcade puzzle game since the genre’s Tetris-inspired heyday in the early 90s. It’s also a game which seems particularly suited to the DS since it’s all about drilling vertically into the ground and thus the two screens stacked together offer a particularly useful set-up.

As such the gameplay doesn’t different markedly from previous outings--it just looks and plays better. As with all the best puzzle games, it sounds simple as all you have to do is drill down through differently coloured groups of blocks. Blocks of the same colour will disappear together if they touch each other and the only other thing you have to worry about is collecting oxygen pills to keep going and see how deep you can drill. With your excavations constantly causing cave-ins and undrillable rocks creating unforeseen obstacles everything quickly becomes much more complicated than the simply rules first imply.

You can use the stylus to control the game but it’s much simpler to stick to the D-pad--but then the twin screens are the real reason for this appearing on the DS. The new set-up is taken particular advantage of with the new Pressure game mode, as you’re chased from the top screen by a giant drill. It may not be a technical marvel but this is still one of the best launch games for the DS. --David Jenkins

5.0 out of 5 stars Frantic fun, 15 Mar 2005
Mr Driller is a loose update to the 80's classic Dig Dug and invloves digging deep into the ground to a target goal. As you drill away you remove coloured blocks, drilling 4 or more instigates a chain reaction clearing multiple blocks of the same colour. Your snaking path to the depths of the Earth becomes ever more perilous as undrilled blocks from above get dislodged and tumble down on you, the result of sloppy quick drilling. But drilling slowly and carefully is not an option beacause you have a limited air supply and need to pick up air cannisters to keep on breathing. As the levels get deeper these air supplies become harder to reach. You usually start the game off with the best intentions; to drill cleanly and reach the goal in one piece, 20 seconds in and your's drilling for your life! Making more mistakes as you try and avoid the tumbling blocks!

And that's the main hook; Mr Driller is a frantic session each time you play. It is often compared with other puzzle games because they share similar principles (blocks, chain reactions, time limits) but Mr Driller is uncomparable. This is fast puzzle action.

Along with the aforementioned classic mode, there is a Pressure Driller mode where you're being chased by a giant mecha-drill-monster, a Time Attack mode where speed is king, and the Tristone Driller mode which where every drill you make costs you one point of air (as opposed to the other modes where your air slowly ticks down regardless of what you're doing). The Dristone Driller mode was in the original Japanse version of the game but was omitted from the US version. Namco must have realised the error (due to lots of bad reviews as this is one of the better modes) and brought the mode back for the UK version.

Another feature which was in the Japanese game but not the US is the single cart multiplay. This allows you to play against 4 other friends to see who drills to their goal the fastest. This is included also in the UK version and is very cool. As you speed downwards you can see ghosts of your rivals working their way down the screen also each trying to get to the bottom first.

The Mr Driller games are always well presented and feature bright cute Japanese graphics. The in game visuals are crisp and full of pixel perfect character whilst the menus and music are all bubblegum sweet.

The game is touch screen but forget about it, it's best without. The touch screen is great for menu navigation with your fingers but once your in the game, grab the d-pad and go with what you know.

To sum up, it's a game to pick up, have a drill and put back down again. You may lose several hours in between though!! Quick, simple and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spirits are High, 7 April 2005

When ordering games for my DS I decided that I'd get one single player game to entertain me for a long period of time(Super Mario64 DS), and one puzzle game to play briefly with friends when they bring their DS's. But when "practicing" I became utterly hooked with the game. It's like a fusion of tetris, dig dug and some other insane puzzle game.
The Gameplay itself is simple, you have to mine through blocks to get to the bottom, whilst destroying as many blocks as possible without getting yourself squashed, trapped or suffocated. Playing against friends this game can get frenzied, and the adrenaline this game draws up is unbelievable. The three modes you can choose from in single player are "mission" which is basic block destroying for points and money (mileage) and unlockables. "Pressure" where you must drill through blocks finding the quickest way round whilst getting power cells to destroy the "destroyer drill" which is bearing down on you with every moment. Finally "time attack" where you must beat the insanely difficult lowest times. This game is difficult yet fun aat the same time and will keep you hooked for a long time. The only let down as far as I'm concerned is that it doesn't impliment the DS feature particularly innovatively.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drill your way to fun!, 10 Nov 2005

So do you enjoy puzzle games? Tetris was amazing but now, games are overshadowed by bigger things like Mario or Zelda games. But this shouldn't. The simplicity of just eliminating block after block with person whilst trying to gain air is what makes this game what it is. It's another addictive game with that "Oh i'll try just 1 more time" factor. We all love those. The main aim is to destroy as many blocks as you can without running out of air, once you get to the end you've completed the level. And anyone who's already played this game will agree that the sound of the blocks bursting is sweet and satisfactory. There's other modes aswell like the one where aswell as travelling downwards and keeping air you have to fight this massive drill monster. There's another one with crystals but it's quite boring. You'll probably concentrate on the main game. Each level is in a place around the World, much to my anger Britain wasn't included. With the ammount of levels and game types it'll last you quite a while. You unlock characters on the way, each one faster than the last. I haven't played the mmultiplayer much because it's not one where you can download of your freind, but it's pretty good and fast paced. This game is a definite must buy for all DS owners.
