4.0 out of 5 stars software good but added CDs not, 27 April 2005
By A Customer
I bought FTM Deluxe Edition after looking at many other products. On the whole the software is very easy to use, has loads of features for entering practically everything you can think of and offers loads of choice for drawing trees and generating reports.
I bought the Deluxe Edition for the extra CD's, especially the 30 free trial to ancestry.co.uk. This actually turned out to be a 90 day trial to One World Tree at ancestry.com which was no use what so ever. The other CD's are very incomplete and you don't know how much of the entire data set is given.
My advise is to buy the cheaper version of the software alone and subscribe to ancestry.co.uk, much cheaper in the long run.

4.0 out of 5 stars Minor improvement, 3 Mar 2005
By Will Stevens "Will" (Carlisle, England) - See all my reviews
This is slightly better than Family Tree Maker 8, which I was previously using. The appearance of the main family screen is better; one thing which I was pleased to see was the ability to access source information by a single click. Unfortunately, though, the actual handling of sources is as weak as ever.

On the whole I feel cheated; I bought the product simply because someone had sent me an .FTW file which I couldn't read, and I was hoping to get more for my money.

Also, so far, I have not been able to make head or tail of the additional CDs included: English Parish Records, Scottish Parish Records etc. No written instructions are provided and the help facility is more or less useless.

I give the product 4 stars, because, basically, it's good, and it's a useful tool for anyone seriously interested in genealogy. But for anyone who has already paid for an earlier release, the advantages are, in my opinion, trivial.

In a word, I feel that I have been taken for a ride, and I'd advise existing users of Family Tree Maker to think carefully before parting with their money - after all, you can always use GEDCOM to exchange information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought, 17 Feb 2005
By A Customer
The two main leaders for family tree software seem to be this and Family Historian. I chose this as it was slightly cheaper. It does most things well except the all-in-one tree which shows all relatives in a single tree. It makes a complete hash of this and the names don't seem to be in any order and not arranged in generation levels. I contacted FTM support but they agreed the software couldn't arrange things properly. My advice is go to the family historian website and try their demo version and if you want the all in one tree then go for Family Historian. Family Tree Maker is still OK if you don't need the all in one view. Anyone want to buy a slightly used version of Family Tree Maker ?.
