Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There can be few titles in gaming history that were more eagerly anticipated (and more consistently delayed) than Half-Life 2. The original Half-Life was one of the most influential first-person shoot-'em-ups ever made, with its amazing story-led gameplay and incredible artificial intelligence--this sequel follows in the same proud tradition. As with the first game you play resourceful scientist Gordon Freeman as he attempts to fight back against an alien invasion from another dimension. In the years that have passed since the first game the world governments have become ever more despotic in the face of the threat and Gordon once again finds himself fighting both human and alien foes.

Even more so than the original, what sets Half-Life 2 apart from the rest is its incredible technology--stunningly realistic graphics, amazing real world physics and highly adaptive AI. In combining all three elements, the game offers an almost infinite variety. One minute you find yourself being hunted down by Special Forces, using furniture to block doorways and throwing grenades to dislodge container crates and squish unsuspecting bad guys, the next you'll be stalking zombies through an abandoned village or fighting giant War of the Worlds styled tripods with the resistance movement and using a tractor beam gun to capture chunks of masonry and fling it at your enemies.

Half-Life 2 allows all this and more and could very well be the first game to actually exceed its hype, never mind just live up to it.--David Jenkins

From the Manufacturer

1998: Half-Life sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named "Best PC Game Ever" by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide.

Now: Half-Life 2. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors--even the emotions--of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people--people he cares about--are counting on him.

Half-Life 2 defines a new benchmark in gaming with startling realism and responsiveness. The intense, real-time gameplay is powered by Source, Valve's new proprietary engine technology, which provides major enhancements in character animation, artificial intelligence, graphics, and more.

In addition to a limited-edition DVD-ROM version of Half-Life 2, this Collector's Edition also includes:

  • Counter-Strike: Source: The next generation of the #1 online action game.
  • Half-Life: Source: A digitally remastered version of the original critically acclaimed PC game.
  • A free limited-edition T-shirt (offered in men's size XL only).
  • Half-Life 2 Prima Book: Information on character backgrounds, the making of the game, and more than 100 pieces of artwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fuss about nothing, 5 Jan 2005
By Mr. Warren D. Jones "warrendjones" (England) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
It seems that Half Life 2 has got its fair share of uwarranted criticism, I think entirely aimed at the failure to confirm the required internet downloads to play the game. No mention of the game quality which is what the reviews should be about

I received this Xmas the collectors edition. All I had to do was to:
    1) install the software
    2) connect via the internet to receive the downloads, about 3-4 hours via a 56k modem. This also unencrypts files from the DVD and registers your unique game license code
    3) When playing a game for the first you need to be connected to the internet for a short while. Thereafter select to play in off-line mode and all is well

HL1 - This is an updated version of the original game but using the HL 2 game engine (Source)A big game, great weapons, stealth and thought provoking game play

HL2 - Absolutely amazing graphics and game play. This game is the leader of its Genre outclassing the dark, dreary and repetetive Doom 3

Counterstrike - i've not played this (56k mode makes this too expensive

In summary its not really a big deal to install this and be redy to play. Just slightly annoying for a wait having spent your hard earned cash. After this its a doddle.

One minor criticism - You'll have trouble selling this game/package on due to the fact the license key is now tied into yourself if you'e already registered the game. However a game of this class you'll want to keep forever!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set, but A WORD OF WARNING..., 15 Dec 2004

...you might be a little misled by the contents list for this limited edition. You get Half Life 2 (naturally), plus Counter Strike Source, which is the original CS game re-made with the HL2 graphics engine, and which now looks very impressive. You also get Half Life Source - but I was a little disappointed with this. I had assumed it would be the original game re-made with the new engine just as Counter Strike was, but in fact it isn't. Some of the graphical effects have been redone, but otherwise this is identical to the original version of Half Life from years ago. Sure, it's still one of the greatest games ever made, and it runs more smoothly than ever, but I was expecting a complete makeover. Also, I was under the impression this set contained the HL2 strategy guide but I was wrong again - what it in fact contains is a pocket-sized book containing a 60-page extraxt from the Strategy Guide, plus 40-odd pages of images from the 'Making Of' book, 'Raising The Bar'. Again, this was a bit of a disappointment. However, it's still a pretty impressive set, and HL2 remains one of the best PC releases of the year, so perhaps I shouldn't complain too much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Top notch game, shame about the 'special' extras, 22 Dec 2004
    By A Customer
I played this game initially at a friend's place, and found it so addictive that I just had to buy the special edition with all of the extras.

There is little I can say to add to the rave reviews that Half Life 2 has received. It is certainly the most immersive and graphically pleasing first person shooter game that I've played. The plot is a little bit linear, but this makes it also very easy to put the game down, come back to it a week or two later and carry on from where you left off. I have so far played it for around 20 hours, and am expecting that much again until I finish it, and I'll certainly be replaying it on harder settings. The game is getting progressively harder, but not to the point that it becomes frustrating. Other recent FPS releases have fallen prey to this fault.

The games in the special edition include Counterstrike Source, and Half Life Source. Counterstrike is purely an online game where you play as terrorist or anti-terrorist. I much prefer the Unreal Tournament style of play where you can 'respawn' after being killed. Perhaps I need more practise, but this is really not my kind of game.

Half Life Source is the original game 'digitally remastered' (quote from box!) using the the Source game engine. Obviously, it looks better than the original version, but is a little lacklustre when compared with Half Life 2. This was interesting to start up and try but didn't really keep my attention - it is incomparable to the main event.

Finally, there are two disappointing extras. A 'free' T-shirt, which, by the way, is size L and not XL as quoted on the Amazon page, and a Prima 'Official Hint Book'.

Prima Guides are usually excellent, and I have several others already. They are usually A4 format and cover every detail of a game. The Hint Book supplied with this edition is in A6 format and contains only extracts from the real 'Offical' Prima Stratgey Guide and also from the Prima Insider's Guide (full versions available separately!) After the first few levels, which is certainly much less than 5% of the game, perhaps only 1-2%, the hint book is virtually useless.

Adding to this was the disappointment when I opened the biscuit box size steel case - it was mostly empty!

As a conclusion, do I recommend Half Life 2? Absolutely - this game deserves 10/10.

Do I recommend the special edition? No, not really. I like to collect special editions of games and DVDs, but in this case, the extras were not of the quality I expected - not at a 50% price increase anyway.

My recommendation would be to buy the normal version together with the full Prima Strategy Guide - this will still work out cheaper than the special edition.
