4.0 out of 5 stars The Pacific region in music, 7 Jan 2005
By A. D. Lewis "adlew_uk" (Blackwood, S. Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my first encounter with the music of Peter Sculthorpe; the Naxos price makes it easier to try things one is not to sure about! All 5 pieces on this disc have real substance, and Sculthorpe has a distinctive voice which deserves wide recognition. This is modern music that is challenging yet utterly accessible and visceral. There are elements of ritual and rhythm that have acute power and impact, and at times a brooding menacing quality that pulls one into the music. Sculthorpe's ability to paint a living, earthy, vital canvas is as unique and intriguing as that of Villa Lobos, though the landscape and social climate that inspires each is very different ( and Sculthorpe's music is kept on a tighter leash)
All the music satisfies and has direct sincerity. EARTH CRY, for example, is not a rag bag piece of music with a bit for didgeridoo tagged on for some 'ethnic' or 'folksy' purpose. It is a fascinating, gripping, melodious piece with an earthy, primitive feel about it.....and the didgeridoo sound is magnificent and unforgettable! The Piano Concerto is a major contribution to the repertory, but the disc as a whole deserves to be heard. Recommended, even to the cautious.
