From beginning to end you will most probably feel a little scared whilst listening to this album. You will never look at a CD the same way again!
Very rarely are horror scores released, presumably because the publishers believe listeners won't buy them because they won't work outside of a cinema. They are wrong! 'The Grudge' is a very scary film and it's not until you listen to this CD that you appreciate how large a part the music played in creating fear inside of every viewer. The first track introduces the only real theme of this soundtrack and provides a nice opening to the album. After this you will be drawn into your speakers as the next 6 tracks shock and perturb you. The tracks are slow and scary and are extremely atmospheric. These tracks build to a climax then break off only to build once again. The opening theme recurs at the end of track 7 and throughout track 8 to conclude the album appropriately.
Christopher Young's sparse use of theme is interesting, however I feel some listeners will not find much use for it. 'The Grudge' has elements of James Newton Howard's 'The Sixth Sense' and I know if you liked some of the enticing tracks from that score you will certainly appreciate what Young has come up with here. This album draws you in and after the 40 minute score is complete you will need to take a deep recovery breath.
I find it a little disappointing that Young hasn't included more themed music because the harp and string instruments in the opening and closing tracks work brilliantly together.
To conclude, 'The Grudge' packs a full punch but if you're not a fan of themeless, tense music you should steer clear. If you want a true, accurate and daunting horror score, this is definitely the one for you.
