This "Hits" collection is less one of very recent chart material (only four tracks were in the Top 40 at its release date) but more a review of the whole year's output from the Sony/BMG/Warners labels, on which basis it works very well, with a lot of big names and big hits featured. The content, as ever, covers the mainstream and as many tastes as possible; you won't like it all but you will like some of it. With a nice sense of symmetry there are 60 tracks, and with a running time of three and a half hours, your average office Christmas party music requirements are sorted.

It is, however, effectively a compilation from Hits 57, 58 and 59, with the four recent tracks added, together with a few which were slated for inclusion in those issues and dropped at the last minute (eg Muse, Damien Rice and the Zutons). This does rather reinforce the impression that the last two Hits albums were a bit thin on quality. I held back from buying them at the time, and my patience has now been rewarded.

Not many 2CD albums have many songs that i like this is a 3D album and there are sooooooo many songs i love on it and that i wanted to buy for ages eg lick it, call on me and these words. This is a great mixture of music suitable for everyone. Definitly better than any of the other Hits albums especially Hits 57!!! It is at a great price to if you think about it each CD only costs £4.33 which ain't bad at all!!! Especially as they are top hits. Just go and buy it you have nothing to lose.

In the battle of the compilations between Nows and Hits, this looks to me like an admission of defeat by the Hits team: an apparent bumper 3CD edition msquerading as a new one in the series which is actually padded with loads of titles from the previous two Hits releases. A pity, as the Hits offered a very different and complementary take to the Nows on the chart scene. But with Hits missing one of their usual release slots earlier in 2004 (they should be up to Hits 61 by now), and now churning out this compilation of their compilations, it looks as if they're no longer trying to compete. Having said all that, if you only buy one chart compilation all year, this is a pretty good one!
