Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

When the Beatles catalogue was first issued on CD in the 80s, an attempt was made to standardise the releases (which often varied wildly in content internationally) by using their original British format. But this confounded many Fabs fans in the US who now found CDs with track listings that often differed dramatically from their original American LPs. More maddening, the initial four releases were only available in not-so-glorious mono mixes. This four-CD collection of the band's 1964 American album releases finally addresses those concerns, and then some. Meet the Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, Something New, and Beatles '65 have been digitally prepared from Capitol's vintage album masters and presented in both the original stereo and mono mixes released back in 64. This set gives younger fans a chance to finally hear the band's epochal early music in stereo--and should please an older generation by returning massive hit singles like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "She's a Woman," and "I Feel Fine" to their original American album contexts. The booklet contains a wealth of rare photos and concise notes by noted Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn. --Jerry McCulley

Box Set Description

The Beatles – The Capitol Albums box set comprises The Beatles first 4 US (Capitol) albums – available for the first time on CD in this form. Tracks from all four US albums (Meet The Beatles, The Beatles' Second Album, Something New and Beatles '65), originally released 40 years ago, will be available both in mono and stereo.

Packaging features the original US album sleeve designs in card wallets, plus a brand new 52 page booklet in the style of a scrap book, with comprehensive notes by Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn, a great selection of pictures and memorabilia from the era, plus quotes from the Beatles themselves. Artwork features the Fab Four and the Capitol Rainbow label in a longbox/slipcase format, which folds to CD size for ease of racking when the longbox is removed.

Unlike their UK counterparts, the early US albums contained many of the favourite early Beatles hits, only available on singles at the time in the UK, and have been in demand on CD for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars About Time, 29 Jan 2005
By A Customer
The reviewer who thinks this is a marketing ploy seems to be missing the point.

As any serious Beatles fan who has either spent big money on near mint original USA vinyl or spent not quite such big money in the 90's on the variety of bootlegs of the original USA LPs will know, the mixes on these LPs are completely different to those on the UK albums and contain some unique versions of the tracks.

Examples : The US Mono version of 'And I Love Her' features Paul's lead vocal single tracked whereas on all other releases it is double tracked, giving a very different sound to the song.

The US mono version of 'Anytime At All' does not have the piano that is on all other versions, again making this a very different version.

There are plenty more differences to be found. Add to this the difference in the overall mixes, the added reverb in some cases etc, then this box set is totally essential for Beatles completists who don't want to wear out their original US Stereo and Mono LPs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Until a UK equivalent comes along..., 27 Mar 2006
By Laurence Upton (Wilts, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
At first glance it would seem strange that there would be a British market for these American permutations, in whose compilation the Beatles had no hand, and which stretched the original British albums into far greater number by mixing up the tracks with assorted A-sides, B-sides and EP tracks. However, although all the British Beatles albums were released in both mono and stereo versions, the CD versions of the earlier albums (up to and including Beatles For Sale) have been monaural. This was apparently at the recommendation of George Martin, who thought the crude stereo of those early records was below standard for the modern listener. Since then, certain songs have appeared in stereo mixes by George Martin on collections such as The Beatles 1962-1966, The Beatles 1967-1970 and One, but many are available on an official release here for the first time, together with their mono counterparts.

Meet The Beatles! comprises 9 titles from With The Beatles plus the single I Want To Hold Your Hand and its B-sides (This Boy in the UK; I Saw Her Standing There, taken from the album Please please Me, in the US).

The Beatles' Second Album consists of a further 5 titles from With The Beatles plus the B-sides Thank You Girl and You Can't Do That; the single She Loves You/I'll Get You; and 2 tracks from the EP Long Tall Sally.

Something New takes 8 tracks from A Hard Day's Night and adds the other 2 tracks from Long Tall Sally and a German language version of I Want To Hold Your Hand.

Beatles '65 derives mostly from Beatles For Sale (8 of its 14 tracks) plus the single I Feel Fine/She's A Woman; and I'll Be Back, from A Hard Day's Night.

These have all been remastered from the masters used to prepare the original American vinyl albums. These are generally the same as the British masters except that they had been "re-equalised" for the American market, and this generally translates as the addition of echo and reverb. While it is fascinating to hear the effect of this, most markedly on the second disc, The Beatles' Second Album, my British ears usually prefer the original versions.

There are some interesting variants to the British counterparts which in some case amount to more than mere re-equalisation. Money (That's What I Want) is an alternative version; the stereo mix of Thank You Girl features additional harmonica; Paul's voice is uniquely not double-tracked on the mono version of And I Love Her; and the mono version of Anytime At All does not have the overdubbed piano found elsewhere.

Finally, as stereo mixes of the singles were not available at the time of the albums' original compilation, vile fake stereo mixes (or "duophonic" versions) were concocted, and these have been allowed to stand here. The tracks to avoid are the "stereo" versions of I Want To Hold Your Hand, This Boy, You Can't Do That, She Loves You, I'll Get You, She's a Woman and I Feel Fine.

Let's hope The Parlophone Albums Vol. 1 in similar format but with best available and new stereo mixes is planned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on folks - quit whining!, 2 Dec 2004
By A Customer
There are a lot of folks here bemoaning the packaging, the music, the format, the price, the US mixes, overall merit of the release etc etc. I for one am happy to hear the stuff. I value the combined stereo/mono versions of each album. Four albums per set? I think its reasonable value for money.

Since the first Beatle CD releases all those years ago I have always wanted stereo versions of the early albums on CD - now I'm getting them! Yes, I know some of them are duophonic but at least it is happening. So Capitol fiddled with a bit of echo on their tapes - not ideal but we can't change that.

I also value the handful of Capitol song versions that ARE different to the European mixes. Now I won't have to rely on my US cassettes to keep my collection complete.

This stuff is for fans people. If you don't like it then take your money elsewhere. There are plenty of satisfied customers here and I, for one, am looking forward to Volume 2 and beyond! Hooray!
