Fox - Tails of illusion, 7 Feb 2005
I first heard this album when a stoner in my house gave it to me on an old beat up tape knowing that I liked my music with a psychedelic slant to it. Listening to this album always brings back memories of that very strange year but it is the strength of some of the songs on the record that constantly makes me play it. The album meanders between songs which are just ok to the zenith of everything I love about what music does to me. The albums a mid-seventies classic made in the year I was born, and contains many ingredients mixed in the right proportions that I enjoy in music, trippy lyrics, souring beautiful vocals (the sound incidentally that you will hear when you die and ascend to heaven), well jammed guitar riffs and weird stereo head effects. ). The albums songs are generally centred on the themes of drug experimentation, self-discovery and love. 'Yuli Yuli' opens the album and is clearly about a chap who is taking too many drugs and his friends and family are worried that he is going to lose his marbles. This is kind of funny as the many of the other songs on the album talk about the pleasures of drug taking (lovely vocal melodies at the end of this one. 'Survival' is an acoustic hippy tune with great I wish the world could see my vision type lyrics. 'Strange ships' is a little ditty about taking LSD, some of the lyrics are going a bit OTT here e.g., 'Saw a bus in phosphorous doing 200 mph, rainbow wheels were passing us leaving an array of flowers'. It's that have you actually taken it or are you just writing about what you think it would be like kind of thing, still good though . 'Minor Therapy' is one of my favourite songs of all time I can't fault it, it makes you happy, it has a fantastic rhythm, it has great lyrics even the bit at the end which tries to destroy it can't because it's so brilliant. It has the fantastic sing along chorus, 'Life's a situation not a conversation the more you talk about it, the greater the frustration. Life's a contradiction oh and I'm of that conviction the more you think it's real the more its fiction', genius! It makes you want to pick up my guitar and try to write something that bursts with the same kind of positive energy created in this song. 'Kupu Kupa' is so beautiful, you feel like your sitting with the singer around a camp fire under a warm stary night sky in a forest listening to bird song with a massive spliff in your mouth. The song has such a mood it draws you in and kisses you gently on your soul (That may sound a bit pretentious but listen to it and see what I mean). It's a shame the record isn't better known as it deserves a place much higher than some of the dross to come out of the sixties, I wasn't around then but I guess the listening public were getting into other vibes when this came out. Had it been released a few years earlier I'm sure it would be far more famous, enjoy. I feel my limited vocabulary does not do the great songs on this record justice, so listen to them.

two new tracks suck, 15 Jun 2005
Well if you hope the two new tracks will rock your world......DON'T! Kenny young seems to be making a habit of BAD mistakes with this album. First he decides one fateful morn back in 1976 " how can I improve this second album" and after deep consideration comes to the conclusion " I know, I will drop the charismatic, beautiful and talented lead singer Noosha from half of the tracks.....and have my drummer sing instead" Well done ken! 29 years on and his decision making has not improved, far from it. A chance for Fox fans to hear two BRAND NEW tracks with Noosha on vocals, fantastic!! So how can he screw it up? I will tell you... by getting """ragamuffin man Jo 90""" to lend his "talents" to not just one, but BOTH tracks. i.e. monotone guttural moaning with BUNNNNBRRIUM - YOOOOWWW - MMMBIDUMMMM -AAEEHHH - and a liberal sprinkling of " Know what I'm saying" thrown in at regular intervals. Nice second strike Ken, how can you top that, maybe next year you can get Noosha back in the studio and have Saddam and Muggabe rapping in the background. Don't get me wrong, if you like Ragga, Rap, drum and base and Garage.. garden shed or outhouse or whatever it's called that's fine, just don't add it to real music. You can listen to Ken Dodd playing the Peruvian nose flute while he rushes bare arsed up and down the high street if you like, just don't sneak it onto a co with music on it If Mr. and Mrs. "90" can possibly have known what their son was gong to do to a Fox CD one day, maybe they would have taken precautions. That said I love most of the original tracks and it is great to hear them in such excellent quality . Well done cherry red at least someone still has taste.

Fox "Tails of illusion" GTO/CherryRed(reissue), 15 Jun 2005
Superb 2nd album. Kenny Young and Co's 2nd album in series of 3 Fox albums. Slightly disappointed that more bonus B sides not included. Blue Hotel to follow should rectify situation. Cant wait for Yellow Dog material also. amhardwick
