2.0 out of 5 stars Let the agonies commence..., 11 Jun 2008
By Wilus (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
I forget who it was who described the G&S operas as "operas for the unmusical", but listening to this disc I can see what he meant. Technically adept as most of it is, it is difficult to imagine a less sympathetic performance of one of Sullivan's most varied scores. Isidore Godfrey's sole aim appears to be to whip his forces through the piece as briskly as possible; the happy music is without grace or charm, the sentimental music without feeling, the spooky music without grandeur or atmosphere. Compare it with Malcolm Sargent's recording of around a decade later and the contrast is painful: with some of the finest singers of the period and a top conductor at the helm it sounds like a piece of music; with Godfrey and the D'Oyly Carte it sounds like cheap hack-work. Of the soloists, Martyn Green is oddly characterless in the lead and only Richard Watson raises a smile with his droll portrayal of the reformed Sir Despard. This is the standard stage version of the day with all the cuts and alterations made in the 1920s; the sound is decent enough for 1950, but inevitably a bit papery by modern standards.

3.0 out of 5 stars I know a lad who loves a little maid...., 8 Jul 2005

I still dont fully understand the story behind ruddigore. I think its mostly to do with curses and mixed up family ties. But there is also a lot of romance. I actually bought this in preparation for a show i am doing next year, so this is very handy. The only problem I find is that the singers are a bit warbly and you cant really hear some of the words. Plus its also a bit fast being that its a very early recording. Saying that, it was very cheap. If you are looking for something to practice with, choose this. But if you are looking for something to enjoy listening to, I would look somewhere else.
