4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Media Streaming, 15 Nov 2004
    By A Customer
I have been looking to get this for some time now, it was released in the US several months ago. It arrived the other day. It took me 20 minutes to set it up and install the software and it worked straight out of the box. I use a numer of PCs at home and this works well with XP and 98SE(I assume it will also work as well with the other windows flavours, have not tried it with OSX yet).

The PC set up is very easy you highlight the folder you have media in and it sets it up automatically, you can access the contents of the folder from the TV. It works very well with mp3, avi and jpegs. The user interface is quite slick and you can set up slide shows very easily. I have not tested the wireless functionality, streaming rates etc as I have a full 100mbps network at home, so the box is directly connected via a switch and router.

The remote control a little plasticky, but hey it's only £129. I am thinking of buying another one for the bedroom!!

    Well worth the money.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 22 Jun 2005
I was told to wait for the new DVD-Player version that comes out later in the year, but went ahead and bought the DSM-320 anyway. The one thing D-Link could have done to make things so much easier is to have allowed configuration via a web-based control panel - trying to enter IP addresses or words with the software keyboard is a real pain. I have it set-up to go over both wi-fi and powerline/HomePlug, and it was relatively easy to set-up. The unit itself is quite attractive, although probably larger than it needs to be - ideally something like this would really come into its own if it was portable and you could develop around it (e.g. are the streams multicast, using RTSP etc?).

Problems - a) appears to drop IP addresses it is given by DHCP over Ethernet very quickly and take on private addresses (169.x etc). Static addressing does work, but can be very temperamental (wireless seems fine, even with WEP etc). b) It only supports DivX 4 and above (not 3.11), and just doesn't have the processing power to display MPEG-4 based video (e.g. xVid) without stuttering. Don't buy this thinking you'll be able to play anything else than MPEG-1/2 video. c) Ogg files don't get listed properly (very limited codec support too) and it has problems with recursive sub-directories and files being duplicated in the list after being refreshed, d) online services don't appear to be supported in the UK, e) the progress bars and gui as a whole are really clunky, f) you can only fast forward or rewind at 2x speed (no trick-play), which is annoying if you're 90% of the way through a movie and the connection dies, and lastly, g) there's no way to debug problems or find out what has gone wrong (e.g. log of some kind).

Overall, buy it only after thinking over your expectations - its new technology and is bound to have some rough spots. As with everything, the next generation will be better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has a lot of promise, 9 Dec 2004
By Mark Sage "MarkS" (UK) - See all my reviews

For the price this is a nice bit of kit, but it has its problems. I use it wireless and it plays films (divx) fine as well as music, however not all codecs supported. It has issues with fast-forward and pause/play... seems to just lock up. When re-booted it sometimes cannot see the wireless router and will only pickup if the router is rebooted as well. Sound is very bad... the output on mine requires me to turn the amp up very high just to get a normal sound level (i.e. twice the setting that I use for normal Sky or DVD viewing). I suspect a lot of these are software issues that will be fixed over time, but don't expect it to be perfect.
