In a word, QUALITY, 15 Mar 2005
This is definitely the finest Steve Hackett DVD yet to hit the market. A visual and aural treat of the highest order. The beauty of Mr Hackett's playing surely needs no description (so I won't). There is a varied choice of material, old and new (personally I veer more towards his seventies material, but that's just a problem I have). In visual terms it has the clear the 'videoed' (as opposed to filmed) quality of an old BBC Late-Night in Concert show (this is intended as a compliment, by the way folks!). Better, in that regard than the 'Somewhere in South America' or the 'Tokyo Tapes' discs (though the latter is, of course a 'supergroup' affair, and remains a joy for that reason too). Thus, instead of being assaulted with special effects we get to watch a band at play - and this is surely what we want to see? (Isn't it?). Steve looks relaxed, surrounded by a happy young band who mostly look like they could be his nephews (like the Katie Melua band in reverse!). My only gripe, as an epilepsy sufferer, is that I wish he'd lose the strobes, but that's my problem (I can skip the offending track).

JUST BUY IT!, 27 Feb 2006
The title says it all.....A magnificent DVD companion to the 2 CD "LIVE ARCHIVE 04" set, this gig, filmed on the last night of the 2004 Tour in Hungary,(A fertile ground for Mr Hackett, having filmed his "Hungarian Horizons" set there previously),shows the mans mastery of his instrument,as well as the talents of his now regular, very tight 4 piece band. A mix of Hackett songs old & new, & some G*n*s*s tracks thrown in in medley or instrumental form, this is ALMOST perfect..... The perfectionist Hackett wouldn't include his usual acoustic set, being less than happy with the sound on the night. That aside,it is wonderful. The outstanding performance of the show is one not focussing solely on Hackett, but features drummer Gary O'Toole on vocals performing the G*n*s*s classic "Blood On The Rooftops", & he shows a powerful,if slightly nervous, initially, set of lungs, very John Wetton-esque,rather than Ph*l C*ll*ns like. Not only does O'Toole sing but he plays drums at the same time.... No need for Chester Thompson to fill the stool here! Anyone looking to buy a Hackett DVD should buy this. Anyone who has "Somewhere In South America" should watch & compare.... the same band, but tighter, punchier, but at the same time, more relaxed with each other & the music. Hackett will REALLY have to pull something special out the hat to top this next time...... I can't wait......!

I watched this last night, and was blown away. I have also seen SH's Somewhere in South America DVD, similarly impressive. Where this one shines is the quality of the musicianship, which you would expect from Hackett, and the band he surrounds himself with. I would say that the band appear much more at ease here than in the aforementioned south america DVD - this is worth having because it has been well filmed - clear, good camera angles; the sound is excellent, and the set SH plays is very wide ranging, including tracks that go as far back as Firth of Fifth (very emotionally played) to Circus of Becoming. There really isn't a bad moment on this - I am seeing SH on tour this November, and this has really whet my appetite for this. It really does merit a 5 star review, and is worth parting with the hard earned for.
