5.0 out of 5 stars David Gedge is back at his best ever!, 10 Nov 2004
By J. Baker "jonbaker7" (south wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been campaigning for a return of The Wedding Present for years, and along the way have managed to convert friends & family that they really are one of the most underrated bands of the last 20 years. Nearly all of the songs still sound as fresh as the day they were first released - and would easily stand up against any current bands who are considered to represent the "resurgence" of british guitar music.
"Interstate 5" is no exception. At over 6 minutes long you can guarantee that it will recieve very little airplay ( as with all previous Wedding Present / Cinerama releases - apart from the late John Peel who championed both bands right from the start). This is a real shame as the track really is a monster of a tune!
All the gedge trademarks are here - from slow quiet beginnings, steadily through to a blistering finale, all sprinkled with heartbreaking lyrics and spine tingling melodies.
If you've never heard The Wedding Present before then it's time to sit up and take notice! Nowhere else in the british music scene will you hear such perfect pop blended with surging guitars and genius lyrics. Too many bands these days are given the label of "the best british band for years".....the truth is the best has been here all along. Its time for The Wedding Present to show them how its done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highway to Heaven, 11 Nov 2004
Around seven years ago indie giants The Wedding Present quietly went on hiatus. Singer/songwriter David Gedge formed a new band Cinerama with a markedly different style. It was a brave move and sadly one that drove away many of his fans. Over the subsequent years and albums the sound has altered in a steady progression back to the roaring guitar style that peppered The Wedding Present's records. Therefore it seemed to Gedge to make sense to revert his former band's name. Personnel had come and gone but The Weding Present always was about the lyrics, accented singing and driving guitars of Gedge himself.

So, they are back and if you've ignored Cinerama in between times, then this will sound like a more mature, powerful band than the one that left us hanging with the glorious Saturnalia album in 1996.

Interstate 5 is a slow burning 6 minute epic detailing from the narrator's point of view a brief love affair where the lady just wanted a one night stand and the guy was gagging for more than that. Sonically, it blisters with pounding rhythms and crackling guitars.

B-sides Bad Thing and Snapshots add to the package with the former being a joyous romp of a track with a jangly melody that will ring around your head for days. Snapshots is a more laidback and bitter-sweet song with dreamy female backing vocals and a gorgeous coda that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Cinerama album.

So, they are back and - with a 41 date European tour and album, Take Fountain, both to come in the Spring of 2005 - it's unlikely there'll be going away anytime soon.
