Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The 8 million pixel Olympus E-300 digital SLR has a lean and unconventional form, as a result of replacing the penta prism by a TTL Optical Porro Finder. It combines full SLR performance, perfect handling and a reasonable price.

Based on the FourThirds Standard, this compact SLR model is compatible with the complete range of Digital SLR-System accessories, including the high-precision lenses. The optics feature near telecentric construction to draw maximum performance from the camera's Full Frame Transfer CCD. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Olympus E300: awesome yet affordable, 3 Aug 2005
    By A Customer
I have always been impressed with the quality and innovation of Olympus cameras. My first SLR camera an Olympus OM10 is over twenty years old and still takes superb photos. I do a lot of digital artwork and needed a really good DSLR at a price within my budget. I was also interested in the E300's four thirds system having heard so much about and especially since it was heralded as being a worthy successor to the OM System. I was stunned by the quality of the pictures I had taken with the camera straight out of the box. I have tken quite a fe more over the past month at various times and in different settings and if I sound enthusiastic... well its because my jaw is still on the ground. This camera rocks!

The camera is easy to operate, it doesn't take long to get familiarised with the instructions and settings. The lcd menus are well laid out and there are many great options to choose from in diverse settings. The resulting pictures are superb. Olympus Master the Photo editing software which comes with the camera is good but I prefer to other graphic programs and off load the pictures with the usb cable and WinXP. I use a compact flash [CF] card and a compact flash adapter so I can also use XD cards as well. I have an Olympus MJU 400 digital camera and it is very practical to be able to share the xd cards with both cameras. I can also slot the CF card directly into my computer or printer for quick access and printing. The camera can also be updated with firmware further improving its performance.

I bought an Olympus E System bag for the camera and its accessories to keep them secure from accidental damage. I am absolutely delighted with this camera and want it to last as long as my first SLR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DSLR camera, 20 Jul 2005

I got this camera in February, and I am very satisfied. Excellent image quality. Good programs for the lazy while full manual control is also possible. A proper range of lenses and accessories are also available.

Two pieces of advice - get a gig of memory, and get a good camera bag - for you will want to bring this baby with your wherever you go.

On the negative side, the autofocus could be better - especially in darker conditions. Other than that, a great camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain priced Digital SLR, 6 Aug 2006
By Jenny Day "ajenda_media" (Cornwall UK) - See all my reviews

I bought one of these from another online retailer (sorry amazon but they weren't in stock at the time). At the price it is either this, an entry level Nikon or a pentax ist*DL. The other two are both bigger and have lower digital resolutions. So guess which I chose?

Now I know digital resolution is not everything. There is a question of optics, of image sensor accuity atc, but lets face it the lens is made by Olympus and the sensor by Kodak - both leaders in the field, so it should be OK. Well it is after a bit of downloading...

You can read elsewhere about the many shortcomings of the Olympus software that the camera ships with. Many reviewers have slated this camera because of them, but I think that just makes it a bargain because it has depressed the price. What the reviewers don't tell you is that if you download the firmware upgrade to V1.4 the almost all of the problems disappear and what you are left with is a superb digital camera which takes stunning photos but at firesale prices!

What is good - The viewfinder metering and autofocus is easy and intuative. It comes with so many exposure modes that I will never be able to try them all. The lenses are (as you would expect from olympus) superb.

Third party lenses by Sigma and Tamron are beginning to appear.

what is bad - The lack of an on-screen preview is a silly oversight (this is rectified in the next model the E330... but at the expense of lower digital resolution - sometimes you can't win it seems) The other slight anoyance is tendancy of the lens hood to mask the flash coverage in wide angle spread causing a slight vignette effect.

Other than that it's a genuine bargain. Get one while you can.
