4.0 out of 5 stars Great Modern Prog, 24 Nov 2004
By Dr Nick "Dr Nick" (Sheffield, S Yorks United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
For those who don't know, Neal Morse used to front the US prog rock band "Spock's Beard", and in a poll in Classic Rock magazine was included in the top 100 frontmen in rock.
More recently he discovered God, left the band after one final release (Snow), then recorded his life story (Testimony) as a 2 hour prog rock epic, which is one of the finest examples of modern prog around.

"One" is his latest project, with Randy George on bass (excellent) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, one of the best drummers around today) on drums. And Neal on just about everything else, plus various guests.

Neal's voice is what you'd expect from someone who started out as a singer/songwriter: pleasant, with an edge, but within a normal human range (more Bryan Adams than Steve Perry). On the whole the vocal sections are quite straightforward, with catchy melodies, some layered choruses, and thoughtful lyrics. The instrumental parts are something else, however!

It's difficult to describe this album. It has as varied a feel as Testimony had, with slow mellow sections, orchestral parts, slow rock, latin, Eastern, bluegrass, fast rock, metal (sometimes in one track!), all superbly performed and arranged. In places it is heavier than Testimony ever is, and the general structure is a maybe little less complex - less strings, for example - but the individual parts are probably more intricate and harder to play.
And more guitar solo's, including a couple of guest appearances by Phil Keaggy (who's the Christian answer to Alan Holdsworth, if that makes sense).
As an example, the opening track starts with an orchestral fanfare (what my wife calls "Jurassic Park" music), before changing into an uptempo rock number with a funky edge, alternating between guitar and key lines for the main theme, then becomes a more complex and proggy number with building strings, moves to a brief drum & bass funk section, guitar solo, back to the main theme - and all this before any vocals appear!

I like it a lot, and the only reason I've given it 4 stars is that Neal set the bar extremely high with Testimony, and I still prefer that release to this one (tunes just that bit more memorable, for me).
Otherwise it would have been 5 stars, and "One" is still a far superior album compared to just about anything else around today. And I'm sure other people will prefer this release over "Testimony", this is just my opinion.

Prog fans: you'll regret not giving this a listen.

The Limited Edition (which I've got) has a second disc which includes alternative versions of a few tracks, and covers of U2, George Harrison, The Who and other artist's material. More brilliant stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars One to be Pleased About, 16 Nov 2004
The second solo album from Neal since his departure from Spocks Beard. His first, "Testimony", was raved about by a lot of people but I didn`t rate it that highly. It had some truly great bits, but generally struggled to fill a double album. This release is altogether different. Some people might feel uncomfortable with the lyrical content, for Neal became a Christian a few years back and both Testimony and One display the evidence of this. But he is dead serious in what he believes and deserves credit for having the guts to say it so clearly. But whether the lyrics sit comfortably with you or not, this is a musical masterpiece. Much more prog inspired than Testimony, it oozes class. His output is prolific but where does he find these melodies and ideas from? Going from full on prog to tear jerking heartfelt melody and back again. This man is a true genius and deserves to be truly recognised as such. Which means that he probably wont be.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE Excellent CD, 8 Dec 2004
After the TRUE MASTERPIECE that is "Testimony", I wondered if Neal Morse had still enough inspiration in him to create TRUE MASTERPIECE number 2. I shouldn't have worried....He has. This seems to have more of a 'band' feel to it than "Testimony", with Neal putting his message and story across as passionately as before. The musicianship is if the highest calibre. Each song moves, inspires and excites - demonstrating all aspects of the Progressive Rock Genre: from the simple 'Cradle to the Grave' to the progressive complexities of 'The Creation' via the very heavy 'Author of Confusion' and the rousing 'Reunion'. This is possibly the 'One' album that could budge "Testimony" from my CD player. Brilliant! Finally the Special Edition contains a great rendition of "What is Life", with Phil Keaggy sounding just like George Harrison....Stop reading this...go and buy it!
