Amazon.co.uk Review
The story of Brian McFadden is a familiar one--backing singer leaves five piece boy-band at their peak and gets together with song-writer Guy Chambers for a solo career. But will Irish Son bring him the success of Robbie Williams?Unlike Robster, Brian's first single, "Real to Me" went straight to number one. It's far less poppy and safe than what he might have been used to in Westlife and is given added authenticity by the band he chose to use in favour of a generic backing track. Second single and title track of the album is a little more daring still--on the one hand a tribute to the city of Dublin and the other a church-baiting declaration of religious abstinence. "Sorry Love Daddy" stands out as something a little bit more natural than one might expect--an acoustic guitar ballad with only occasional strings augmenting the subtle arrangement. "Almost Here" is an MOR duet with label-mate Delta Goodrem which too is strangely likeable despite their voices sounding miles apart.Irish Son will surprise some doubters who felt the former boy-band balladeer could not cut it as a solo act. Certainly at this stage McFadden's talent in this area of cathartic, folksy, soft-rock is no match for some of the more established artists out there but artistically he's already streets ahead of his former band.--Georgina Collins
