4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, flawed software, 16 Feb 2005
By J. Burling (London, UK) - See all my reviews

I've had almost no trouble whatsoever with this DVD re-writer. It has no trouble burning either +/- formats, and if you're looking for a good value external re-writer, go for this one.
The only problem I had is that the bundled software is somewhat limited. The first time I tried to make a data DVD, it was corrupted (something to do with a 'cyclic redundancy error' - ???) and the software to create video DVDs does not burn avi files, and cannot create PAL DVDs from NTSC files either.
It does come with some other useful software, but if you buy this product, I'd recommend buying/downloading a copy of Nero if you don't already have it.
Apart from the software niggles, this is a well made and easy to install/use product.

4.0 out of 5 stars super dvd, 21 Jan 2005
By M. Atkinson (England) - See all my reviews

The iomega super dvd writer looks very well built & looks strong. The dvd drawer when open fills a little flimsy and the power lead plug is a little bit fiddly when trying to plug it into the back of the dvd rw,it has an off set multi pin plug. The drive is a little bit noisy when the disk is spinning. It is much better than the freecom classic dvd rw, plus it comes with good collection of free software (musicmatch /my dvd /adobe photoshop album 2.0).Overall a very good dvd rw and i'm not disappointed in buying this dvd rw.It only gets 4 stars but buy this one and you will not be disappointed.

    1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought this., 4 Feb 2005
By jsm999 (Bedfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I'm using this DVD writer with a G4 iMac running OSX. It comes with software for the Mac (and for Windows), and installed easily. The driver and user manuals come on a CD, with a printed booklet giving one page of instructions to connect the leads in 20+ languages.

The drive apparently needs to be connected directly to a USB port on the computer, and won't work through a hub. This is a nuisance if (like me) you don't have many ports on the computer. It would have helped if the installation booklet included a warning about this.

The Charismac(TM) Discribe(TM) software for writing DVDs from a Mac is not exactly inuitive. I wanted to write some files to a DVD - by elimination, I worked out that I needed to select 'Build a Mac HFS' (what's one of those?) and then click on 'Data...' to select files. There is an online manual, but I couldn't find instructions telling me how to copy files to DVD, only options about making music and video DVDs, and something for backing up files (Windows only).

The first disc I wrote failed to verify, though it looks fine. I feel I can't really trust it now. The Discribe program has also crashed out for no apparent reason a couple of times.

The drive claims to be able to create 'dual-layer' discs, but only for Windows users.

I wouldn't recommend this drive to any Mac user - can't comment on the Windows software.
