This album is an astonishing piece of work.

I came to Woven Hand unlike many of the other fans who had followed the band's previous outing, 16 Horsepower; it was on a recommendation from a friend, alongside other acts such as Nick Cave and Tom Waits that I was already appreciating very much. What I would have done for a contemporary to either of those bands that could hold a candle to their work.

Woven Hand is not what I'd expected, given the company it was recommended to me in. I'm not sure if this is a common misconception, but Woven Hand is not of the same genre as either Cave or Waits. They are an altogether more dynamic act, weaving folk and eastern sound with more traditional rock palettes. There is a biblical undertone to the music - sometimes you can't help but notice a particularly religious lyric - but take it from me, I'm a confirmed unbeliever and I wasn't discouraged.

Woven Hand are a thoughtful band, with an atmospheric sound and a lead singer with lungs like balloons filled with gravel. They seem to be fixated on emotion, on the feelings that a certain sound or phrase can bring to the surface. This isn't honestly going to make you laugh or cry, but if you want an album of excellent and intensely moving music and aren't put off by the fact that - oh goodness no! - it's lead happens to be a Christian, this is for you. Woven Hand deserve a wider audience. They are no Creed, and let that be a claim to fame indeed.
