Product Description

CD Description

Nathaniel Merriweather (AKA Dan the Automator) and Chest Rockwell (AKA Prince Paul) present the second installment in their ongoing saga. As with the duo's debut, SO... HOW'S YOURGIRL?, it's a comedic love den for the experimental breeding of hip-hop with whatever strikes their mood, be it rock, reggae, nu-metal, jazz, electronica, or dub.
This time theamazingly eclectic guest list includes TV's Father Guido Sarducci, Cat Power, Jack Johnson, members of Linkin Park, Hall & Oates, and Franz Ferdinand, among many others. Surreal advice on dating hygiene alternates with genuine make-out-session-worthy funk (the Prince-esque "Greatest Mistake") and soul (the Otis Redding-esque "Breakdown"). Julee Cruise purrsabout tax breaks on "Class System"(with Pharrell Williams),while "Rock and Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Part 2" morphs into straight-up AOR rock that may have hip-hop purists thinking they put on the wrong disc. Of course, there are still solid beats and rhymes from Del tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, and others. Throughout WHITE PEOPLE, Merriweather and Rockwell make sure that both their cohorts and their listeners are having a good time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is it cos I is white?, 6 Jan 2005
By J. D. Horton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I tracked down this album after getting fully hooked on 'the Truth' featuring Moloko, and I haven't been disappointed. Forget the racist slurs of the previous review, looks like the reviewer needs to take the 'irony detection' class at the modeling school.
This album pulls in the broadest selection of guest vocals on any hip hop album I've ever heard. Pretty impressive, and hard to make it gel, but then this is Prince Paul and Dan the Automator, after all. It's an ambitious album, and yes, some of the tracks don't work out that well - but some are epic, like Rock and Roll, which changes direction so often you have to keep checking it's still the same track (or album), and Class System.
Maybe this isn't going to go down too well with the hip hop purists and maybe it will mostly appeal, (as the title hints at) to white boys like me who love the likes of Cat Power and Jack Johnson too, but personally i think it's a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Hip Hop SHOULD Be..., 26 Feb 2005
Oh my word!! What on Earth is that first reviewer talking about? I doubt the front cover was meant as a racial slur (lighten up...), more of a rebellion against limitations of the Hip Hop image created by marketing. They are breaking the old clichés by presenting themselves as being everything Hip Hop is NOT supposed to be, refined, upper class et cetera... But anyway, on with the review, if an album brings together such an eclectic range of artists and bands such as Franz Ferdinand, RZA, Del, Barrington Levy, The Mars Volta, Qbert and Rahzel (To name but a few...) then you know it's going to be interesting. In the hands of anyone else, such an ambitious project would turn to mush, but luckily Prince Paul and Dan the Automator handle the album expertly, and not only mange to pull it off, but in my opinion, produced THE album of 2004. The album effortlessly combines Hip Hop, Rock, Reggae, Classical and soul flavours which hold your attention throughout. I have played this album to a lot of people and everyone has loved it, whether they are hardcore hip hop heads or not. If you are looking for a Hip Hop album that's a break from the usual 'pimp sipping gin & juice' gangster drivel that has become so tiresome then I can think of no better album that slaps you in the face with it's sheer originality and quality. This album is fresshhh!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix, 12 Feb 2005
I sought out this album after hearing about the excellent back catalougue of the two men involved, namely prine paul and dan 'the automater'. This is a classic concept album that works on many different levels, from the basic beats to the multilayering over vivaldi's four seasons. Not all of the songs work (hence only 4 stars)but on the whole this is a very solid album. My favourite highlight is definetly Rock and Roll, but a song that in my opinion should be put on general release is Breakdown, a smooth lesson in sublime soul.
I think one of the things that will help make up your mind if you wish to buy this album is the fact that the late, great John Peel would have loved it's fresh, innovative sound, and the general eclectic mix of music. A good, fun listen.
