Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The finest football simulation series receives further refinements in Pro Evolution Soccer 4. The presence of an on-screen referee is perhaps the game's most obvious new feature. What's more, this twenty-third being on the pitch is more intelligent than his invisible predecessors: advantages are played more frequently and the fairness of decisions is improved. Another welcome new feature is that of player-specific special moves, whereby only certain gifted footballers will have outlandish tricks in their repertoire--very much in keeping with real life.

Although there was little room for improvement over Pro Evolution Soccer 3's supreme gameplay, Konami has seemingly found it. Dribbling has been given especial attention; the result is tighter control. Crosses, too, are now easier to perform exactly as desired. Also, penalty kicks and free kicks offer increased accuracy with their adoption of a new control system.

Some 136 club sides, including all 56 teams of the Spanish, Italian and Dutch leagues (these are officially licensed) are on offer in Pro Evolution Soccer 4, as well as 50-odd national teams. Typically, this new version of Pro Evolution is the most comprehensive to date--the new season in videogame football kicks off in spectacular fashion. --Jonti Davies

4.0 out of 5 stars Can Konami improve perfection?, 4 Nov 2004
Having subjected Pro Evolution 3 to a year of servitude, overplaying it until my fingers where nothing but bloody stumps I felt guilty when I played this game. Guilty because I immediatly realised that Pro Evo 3 was destined for retirement, to a life of gathering dust on the proverbial (or real in this case) shelf with it's forefathers.
Most believed that Konami would top Pro Evolution 3 with their new rendition however few foresaw the magnitude of the change. PES4 rights the wrongs of PES3 with the style that only Asian Game Designers can produce. So have Konami improved on the supposed perfection of PES3? Why yes, they most certainly have.
Not only is the game considerably more difficult (Although I venture that PES4's 6th star difficulting rating can be compared to Spinal Tap's volume: 11) but the physics and graphics have been rejigged to provide a delightful gaming experience that saturates even the most pixel-hungry of gamers needs for visual excellence. The atmosphere captured is phenomenal and the players of the now licensed leagues look perfect. Graphics aside though this game provides a challenging yet entertaining football experience that should leave no fan wanting more. The ball dips and swerves with gorgeous realism and scoring is no longer a matter of simply side - stepping and striking from the edge of the area. You do not know pleasure until you score a screamer with Nedved, or until your shot curls into the top corner - past a keeper who misjudged it and didn't even move.
Stats are no longer the sum of their parts, precise stats produce different results. For example, Henry has top speed 92 - 4 lower than Owen's 96, however when he gets the ball his pace is blistering because his pace paired with his awesome acceleration, dribbling ability and general technique turns him into a footballing machine. Furthermore when someone as good as Henry gets the ball you genuinly feel like you're in trouble. Van Nistelrooy muscles off defenders with scary realism, Henry is able to touch it past tackles with deft feet and even more 'mediocre' players such as Jermaine Defoe or Emre act and feel like the real thing. So the stat's have been improved then.
The Master League is amazing, Championship Manager like in it's detail. Share details of new found players with friends as you scower Brazil and Argentina for young talent then watch as they blossom into the backbone of your team. There is a seemingly endless ammount of players to be discovered and as your players grow old and senile you will have to search for more. So in theory at least this Master League could go on indefinetly. Will you do a Lazio and buy big in an attempt to win things in the here and now or develop a universally envied youth development system that supplies you with hot young talent? The decision is yours to make. However the decision as to whether or not you should buy this game should have been made a long time ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like football? - Love this..., 28 Sep 2005
So, this is only the second time that I have written a review, which means that something must really be either i) great or ii) damn awful for me to write something... and that tells a lot about this game - it is unique, it is engrossing, and it is more than worthy of the price you have to pay. Let's start with the bad things - well, no official licence means no official names, and then the commentary is terrible!! - and that is it!!! - there really is nothing else that doesn't give this game the maximum possible score. At the end of the day, there is the question of the FIFA series versus the PES series, and it really depends on what you want (I own both). Ultimately, if you want to pretend to be Beckham and score some crazy wonderful goals - then FIFA is your game, without question... but IF you LOVE football, if you love the game for it's good points (the occasional wonder goals, the sheer uncertainty of it, the deflected winner in the last minute, the bad referee decisions, the dodgy offsides) - then you MUST own this game. It is more than a game, it IS football, get a wicked deflection that goes for you, or have a team dive around the pitch and have your men sent off - it is all here, it is all to be appreciated and enjoyed... THE FINAL WORD - like games? - buy FIFA... like football? - why haven't you bought this already???? - Enjoy, it truly is a wonderful piece of software

5.0 out of 5 stars Pro Evo better than ever, 4 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Another great instalment of the best footie game available. The realism is better than ever, and now with ONLINE gaming. If you have PE3 and are unsure about upgrading, don't be, BUY IT!

PESFAN.com has an option file that will not only give you all the names etc, but the official kits and flags (down to the Nike tick and Vodafone symbol on the Man Utd shirt etc). Now there are no reasons left for wasting your time with EAs pathetic FIFA series!
