Chronicles of Oshi, 2 May 2005
I have only watched this film once (so far) so forgive me if some things I say seemingly lack thought or expansion.Remember the old man, in Ghost in The Shell, who asks Batou if he can take the man's rubbish to the 'ghost hacked' bin man? Well Avalon, despite the country, is set in his world. As the division between politically rich and financially poor has drifted open, the potential for social mobility has been stopped, and a disillusioned generation seems to now infest the city, rather than uphold it. Ghost in the shell's theme (among others) of the fearfully silent slide into technological illusion has been replaced in Avalon for an active escape by youth from the real world for relief in fantasy, which I found as a refreshing angle to take the subject matter from, and an acute reflection of today's computer gaming and indeed film watching youth culture. The anime style was enjoyable to watch with beautiful visuals of dystopia and a soaring soundtrack to go, but at times I felt (without sounding totally sadistic) that with real character actors, the action could be a bit lethargic because you see In anime, and ghost in the shell particularly, when someone gets hit, it goes 'crunch'. This detail I felt upset the flow which even I have to admit did drag sometimes, and again it would have been nice for the hardened warrior to show a bit more that she was bricking it as the tension grew around the Bishop and a coming confrontation with the ghost programme But those are really my only qualms with an essentially good film, on its own or as a viable addition to the Oshi world, though if you are a big fan, you've probably bought it already!
