Product Description

Product Description

Emotive, the third album from the politically aware rockers features a host of classic protest song covers by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Black Flag, as well as two new original songs, "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums" and "Passive".

CD Description

For EMOTIVE, their third full-length album, A Perfect Circle offers up a covers-heavy collection that includes a numberof protest songs. What's most striking about this set is the way in which the group reworks pop classics. In the hands of frontman Maynard James Keenan and company, John Lennon's "Imagine" becomes a foreboding lament, and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is transformed into an oddly soothing, nearlyambient song. Other standout tracks include a lullaby-like,electronics-laced take on Depeche Mode's "People Are People" and a gently melodic version of "When the Levee Breaks" (almost totally unrecognisable from Led Zeppelin's revered rendition). EMOTIVE also presents two APC originals--the frustration-venting "Passive" and the scathing "Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums". Although a few tracks feature amped-up arrangements, it's remarkable how many of these tunes are subdued and understated, further backing up A Perfect Circle's status as a dynamic, unpredictable band.

3.0 out of 5 stars Yeah some good some bad, 3 Nov 2004
This is an album that will split people completely. I find that it takes a few listens to pick up the killer tracks and the somewhat average tracks.
APC have a large fan base in this country, mainly due to the incredable lyrics and voice of Maynard James(who makes almost any track he appears on, a classic and his voice can be found anywhere from deftones to RATM) but with this album the band are using covers(+2 of their own) to put across a strong political message to the world. Some of these covers are so well known that APC were always goin to find it hard to put their mark on them. Sayin that i find APC version of John Lennon's Imagine is very APC and in ways improves on the original(I never really JL one anyway! So u dont have to agree), they also have success with Peace,Love and Understanding, Lets have a War, When the levee breaks. And the two APC songs, Counting Bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war Drums and Passive are really good too.But fans may find it hard to appreciate some of the other tracks.

Just give the album a chance, it is a worthy purchace for APC fans and any die hard maynard Fans, although maybe check it out off a friend first!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not eMpressed, 5 Jan 2006
I must say i wasn't impressed at all with this album. fair enough it is mostly a cover album and completely aimed at politics but in my opinion it is very weak. The cover of Imagine is interesting but is essentially boring after too many listens. It's cool to hear Maynard sing on a song like that but it maybe should have gone as a B-side on a single not as the single from APC's new album.

'counting bodies like sheep...' is a interesting remix of 'Pet' off '13th step'. The original is a whole lot better in my opinion and this remix seems to be very Nine inch nails-ish, which isn't bad, just not very inventive. 'Passive' is an original song written by APC and Trent Reznor, and has been on the net (live versions) for ages. the recording is good and the song is interesting but really if it was placed in 13thStep or mer de noms it would have been just another song not a single.
It really is interesting to listen to how Maynard and co translate these own gems into their own musical language but really and truly the album only spent a week in the player,it doesnt grow on you or nything.
i would give the other APC albums 4s...but this gets a measly 1 :(

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish!, 1 Jun 2005
By J. Ghosh - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am disappointed almost to the point of tears. I was eagerly looking forward to A Perfect Circle's latest offering and it is utterly shoddy. I agree with all of the criticisms in other reviews, and none of the praise. I have forced myself to listen to it three times today and really do not like it at all. The NIN collaboration is a mess. The covers are dreary and unimaginitive. Worst of all, the only time we get to hear the kind of vocals we expect from Maynard James is in what is essentially a remix of Pet from the previous album.

I can only hope the new Tool album is markedly better than this pretentious drivel. Now I'm going to put The Thirteenth Step and Mer De Noms on repeat on the stereo to remind myself what this band used to sound like.
