The film opened in America in October 2004 - the influential Chicago Sun-Times described it as "a masterpiece!"
Edward R. Pressman (one of its three producers, who also included Terrence Malick, director of the famous movie Badlands) had for some time been trying to get Philip Glass to score one of his films. After reading the script, Glass quickly agreed and visited the set in the swamps of Georgia, enduring biting sand gnats and the heat of the South, to get a feel for the film.
The score, combining a crystalline string orchestration, the purity of the children's voices and the grittiness of the didgeridoo, creates just the right mix of mystery, sensitivity and grunge the film required.
With its tonal complexity and its intensity, Philip Glass's evocative score is as integral to the suspense-driven narrative as the expert character portrayal and masterful cinematic direction. A tale of violent legacies between two generations of brothers, Undertow depicts what happens when a hardworking father raising two sons without their mother is paid an unexpected visit by his older ex-convict brother who is looking to settle an old score.
Jamie Bell, the young British actor who won countless awards for his debut as the title character in Billy Elliott and starred as Smike in Nicholas Nickleby, attracted particular praise from the US critics as Chris in Undertow.
Orange Mountain has released several of Philip Glass's film scores, including The Music of 'Candyman', and music for two Errol Morris documentaries, 'The Thin Blue Line' and last year's Oscar winning 'The Fog of War.'
