Bessie Smith, rightly called "The Empress of the Blues" was a hugely important figure in the history of popular music. Highly influential - Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, George Melly and even Mick Jagger can be counted amongst those who she greatly affected and inspired.

Proper Records are to be congratulated on this thorough and outstandingly well presented collection of a mammoth 95 tracks covering her entire recording career from 1923 to 1933. The sound is really good, despite the antiquity of the recordings and included is a lavish 45 page booklet telling Bessie's story and giving valuable background to all the songs.

The discography is excellent, detailing the accompanists and the dates of sessions. Here are famous names likes Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong , Coleman Hawkins and Jack Teagarden as well as lesser celebrated, but excellent sidemen such as the wonderful trombonist Charlie Green ("Trombone Cholly") and cornet player Joe Smith (no relation).

Many of the songs here may be familiar from other sources - "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "'Tin't Nobody's Bizness if I Do" for example - but you can be sure in all these cases, Bessie does them best. The are also many lesser known true gems scattered throughout this highly recommend four disc set - "You've Been a Good Ole Wagon", "Poor Man's Blues" and my favourite "Send Me to The `Lectric Chair"

What we have here is the definitive Bessie Smith collection. Buy with confidence and enjoy for years to come.
