It is a documentary about the one-day recording session which culminates in the cast audio CD. Mel Brooks explains a lot behind his inspiration for writing the musical for Broadway, and we see how amazingly Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick approach their roles. The quality of singing is astounding, and the behind the scenes comments are hilarious and revealing

Living with someone who's obsessed with The Producers Musical, I finally want to see it, and until the new film is released this is the closest there is. But why hasn't the show itself been released on DVD? Instead we have the recording of the CD - cameras pointing at actors in booths, for well over an hour. Mel Brooks occasionally butts in and hogs the limelight to go on about how wonderful he is, gleefully ignoring how many bad films he's made. The cast just look embarrassed by him.

It's not a total loss. I mean, these songs are a lot of fun, but the unavoidable fact remains that it'd be more fun to see them performed on stage. If you own the CD there are no surprises at all, as the stuff sounds exactly the same. Just to rub it in, the "bonus features" include a photo gallery of the stage show and an extra chunk of footage - "More From Mel," as if we'd ever need any.

Short of an ego-trip, this is quite a wasted opportunity. With not a moment of the stage show present and very little merit of its own, this is like a dull behind-the-scenes featurette and little more.
