As Jess Franco films go, this one has even less plot than most. In fact, one of the most enjoyable aspects of this piece of trivia is trying to work out what it's supposed to be about. Essentially, we have some strip club / pole dancing club, somewhere in Paris, named after its star, a woman called Blue Rita, the whole enterprise serving as nothing more than some sort of elaborate espionage sting.

Men visiting the club are seduced by its women and lured back to a flat. Disturbingly (given that this is a German-made movie), there are gas chamber analogies - giving Franco an opportunity to have busty women run around in gas masks. The men are then confined in some small cell and subjected to a magic potion which makes them crave for sex - a torment which leads them to sign away their money and earthly secrets.

A lot of naked women strut around in high-heeled boots. Basically, that's the plot. A lot of naked women strut around in high-heeled boots. Forget acting (apart from an eccentrically overacted death scene), forget dialogue. Forget realism - because somehow Interpol is trying to infiltrate the club. A film to be watched once and quickly forgotten.

Say what you like about old Jess, but he knew what he wanted from a film, and very often got it. Like with Blue Rita, barely enough budget to cover all the doors in tin foil or make the night club look very different from a waiting room, he got the girls, he got them to take off their clothes and he used lights and what props he had to make a ravishingly attractive piece of nonsense. Here is the most elegant of soft core movies that also includes the torture (albeit with green paint and promise/denial of sex) of gents in chains. Whole scenes are shot through fish tanks and although there is some sort of spy plot-line, it makes no sense so can be completely ignored.

This is the BBFC cleared & cut UK release, do yourselves a favour & get the VIP productions Swiss version as it's unadulterated & much more fun. Hey, if you've got the money buy their version of the Franco box set 'cos it's the only place to get an uncut "Love letters of a Portuguese Nun" as well.
