4.0 out of 5 stars Good features for all levels of photographer!, 26 Jan 2005
By K. Buddie (Southampton, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought this camera about a month ago after lots of deliberation. It is the first digital camera I have owned (apart from the camera on my mobile phone, which is awful in comparison) and overall I am very happy with it. My main reasons for buying was the fact it has such a long zoom range, yet is still really compact.
The amount of features on offer is great - you can basically have complete control over every aspect of the picture, or you can switch it to automatic and let the camera do all the work.
The only weakness I have found with the automatic mode is focusing in low light (at night in a normal room lit with, say, a 60watt bulb). It sometimes has trouble focusing, especially if there is little contrast. However, you can quickly switch to manual focus and do it yourself if this is the case.
The movie mode is also a bit weak, but if you want to take movies, buy a movie camera!

As regards the comment about the two-step focusing; this is what happens on the vast majority of compact digital cameras, and in general the autofocus is pretty fast.

Despite buying the camera for its zoom, I have spent most of my time playing with the macro modes. In super macro mode you can take shots from just 3cm away from the subject, and they are crystal clear!
Overall, the shots are well exposed and the colours are great.
The filesize is also quite small (about 1.5 mb for the largest size on highest quality setting) so you can fit a good number of shots even on the included 32mb card.
Battery life seems OK - it improved a lot after the first few charge/discharge cycles and I would say it is quite close to the stated 100 shots per charge.
In terms of usage, all the buttons are in the right place and there is not much fiddling with menus to change settings. It also feels solid and well made.

To sum up, I would recommend this camera if you want a long zoom and small camera. However, if you are happy with just having a 3x optical zoom, you could probably get a cheaper 5 megapixel+ camera which has better autofocus performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Optio SV, 20 Dec 2004
    By A Customer
I've had the Optio SV for a couple of weeks now, and have been generally impressed with it so far.

The main reason I bought it were for it's small size and large zoom, and I've been impressed with the way it worked so far.

The only thing I don't like so far is when you have the camera set to auto focus you have to press the shutter twice for it to take the photo, which adds about a second to taking the photo, so it you want to take a moving photo you need to try and predict where your subject will be in a second, rather than where it is now. This can be reduced by using the manual focus

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but flawed, 14 Dec 2004
    By A Customer
I purchased a Pentax SV just over two weeks ago and on the whole I have been very impressed, but it may have a flaw that would limit any serious photography. At the wide angle setting on one side the pictures are out of focus. I hasten to add that at all other zoom lengths the camera is capable of generating pin sharp pictures that have good colour saturation. I've contacted Pentax about this issue and I seem to be the first person to have experienced this fault/flaw, however as they said it could be a result of having the smallest 5x zoom on the market.
Generally detail in the images is excellent and prints can easily be made up to A4 size only at an ISO setting of 400 does noise become apparent and even at this speed results are very good for a point and shoot camera. The only other issue I have discovered is than on automatic ISO setting the camera is very reluctant to use the more sensitive speeds i.e. 200 and 400 resulting in a very real risk of camera shake in low light, the camera only seems to step up to greater sensitivity when the shutter speed reaches 1/10th of a second. Obviously it is impossible to hand hold a camera with a 180mm zoom at these speeds.
To summarise the Pentax SV could have been a really excellent camera, I would wait until other reviewers rate the camera before buying. If my experience is unique then this camera is definitely worth considering. As the camera stands it has a usable range of a 4x zoom, in that case save your money and buy a cheaper camera with a more tried and trusted technology.
