Small & Beautifully Formed - Best Compact Around!, 16 April 2005
By A Customer
Fantastic bit of kit! I bought this camera just before we went away on holiday to Egypt - love it! I did lots of research to find the best compact camera but also at a budget of no more than £200 - picked this one up with memory card for just less than that. I wanted something that I could easily put in my pocket, but also take quality pictures with as well. Size matters? You won't be disappointed! As a previous Canon owner I had been looking at the Canon A85/A95, but although these had great image quality, and used AA batteries, they were just too big. The S5i is small, fit discreetly in your shirt pocket small, however this has no bearing on image quality, ease of use or build quality. It is loaded with settings for every occasion (including food?!) that you may use it for. Ease of Use - All of the functions are very simple to use, and you can quickly change around the settings without any fuss. You can override the auto focus and flash, and set up your own manual settings for greater control if you want. The boot up time is fast and the shutter speed is also extremely good. The software that comes with it is intuitive, and straight-forward to use. The battery lasts for ages, and can be recharged in about a couple of hours. Quality of Image - The image can be printed out as big as A4 size (helped by the 5 mega pixels!) but the quality of the image is never compromised. As there are loads of settings to play with (sport, flower, night, underwater etc) virtually every scenario is catered for. In all modes the colours are rich and extremely sharp. Extras - It can take movies with sound very easily; and even better as it's got an AV adapter, you can plug it into the TV and display your pictures/videos - with sound! Also, you can add sound bites to pictures as you take them as well if necessary! Competition - I looked at Canon A95, Ixus 400, Casio and Fuji equivalents - blows them all away! Overall - You won't be disappointed. Remember to buy a SD memory card (I bought 512MB) and a case as well. It fits into a Lowepro D-Res 4M case perfectly. The S5i gets the wow factor every time I get it out, for size and image quality. Best compact around - love it!
