Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

As a young Marine officer, William Steel, the son of the highly decorated USMC General Thomas Steel, you will be thrown into your first combat experience while leading your men in and out of battles. The lessons and theory from the Naval Academy will be tested in the hell of war. Your decisions will make the difference between life and death, saving and losing hundreds of lives...

Eventually, your fight against global terrorism will take you to far lands, from the rigged mountains of Afghanistan, to the vast and blazing deserts of Iraq. On the path that lies ahead, there shall be pain and suffering. The only thing that will keep you going is your father’s legacy. His old combat diary becomes your guardian angel. It will lead you down the right path while empowering you with your late father's wisdom and his legacy of being one of the true great warriors of his time.

Will of Steel is a modern warfare tactical 3D RTS with some elements of RPG. The player is assigned one battalion that he/she can command. The battalion is composed of infantry, battle tanks, APC2, recon and anti-aircraft platoons.

The player has the option to view all the units within the battalion as well as the military equipment that the units possess. The player must make wise military choices and decide how to adjust his/her actions to counteract the strategy employed by the enemy forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Throughout the game, the player also strives to improve his/her career. By winning medals and being promoted, various special options are revealed that he/she can use in battle.

Special options include:

  • Air transport
  • Artillery support
  • Air strike
  • Close air support
  • Satellite reconnaissance
  • Long range missile attack
  • Reinforcement
  • Special operations team

Through the use of dynamic Sun, missions unfold from dawn to dusk with a number of climate conditions, such as rain and fog, which may help or hinder your battle progress.

In this game, the player has full control of all assigned units, camera, and special options such as: Air Attack, Transport, Special Teams etc, The player orders unit movements, issues voice commands, chooses tactics, groups units, and can even choose the types of weapons and stances that the units take. These possibilities will allow the more skilled players to play the game and lead their troops exactly the way they desire while the less skilled players will also be able to manage units while using simpler commands and options.

    Voice Control
Voice commands, mouse pad, and keyboard are the three controllers that the player uses throughout the game. It is possible to use all three input devices at the same time. It is also possible to play the game almost entirely by voice. The mouse pad can be used to select units and groups of units, to point to the places where commands should be executed, and to select options from one of the menus. Keyboard allows for a quick and convenient way (shortcut) for various commands to be executed.

Special focus is given to voice control because it has never been used in RTS games before. Voice control should help the player to control his/her units much more easily and effectively than by just using the keyboard and mouse pad. Besides that, voice control has the purpose of simulating natural verbal communication between officers and their units. This will add to the realism and will make the player feel as if he was a real-life military commander.

Voice control can be used to select units and groups of units (by calling up their names or using the real military phonetics), to issue all available commands and to select any of the special options. Also the camera can be controlled by voice (movement and zooming). The player has the option to turn on (and off) the names and permitted commands displayed above all available units, so that voice commands can be issued more easily without having to memorize all the names and possible commands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice!, 8 Mar 2005
I have played the game for about 5 hours now. When it first started I was really impressed with the quality and detail of graphics. Usualy strategy games have average graphics at best, this game has very detailed ingame objects.

The strategy part itself is also very good although I must say it's not anything completely new. The weapons you control and commands you can issue are standard which is fine with me, I guess that's just how new strategy games are. And the voice system is interesting, it lets you say your commands instead of typing or clicking, nice.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Very Poor Effort Indeed, 21 Jun 2005
    By A Customer
I am not usually the type to write reviews for games but in this case I felt compelled to clack at the keyboard in the hope that someone from GMX reads this and takes heed.

    This game is appalling.

Starting with what you get. A box containing the headset and the CD in a paper sleeve. That's it. Nothing else. No manual, no keyboard reference card, no install instructions. Not even the usual gumph advertising other games or trying to get you to register, simply a box, a CD and the headset. The headset is more than adequate for free but to be honest if you need a new headset and are planning to get a game into the bargain I wouldn't bother, just spend a little more and get a better headset.

Starting the game I expected some sort of tutorial due to the lack of and printed material. Wrong. Straight into the mission with no clue about what you are doing. Now this may have been my fault as I chose not to add a start menu group during installation but a bit of googling pointd me in the direction of C:\Program Files\GMX Media\Will Of Steel\Data\doc and sure enough there it was all six pages of it. Still better than nothing I thought so armed with half an idea I started the game again with all sorts of ideas about being able to set my attacks up and call in all of my units with voice commands. Wrong. The voice recognition is poor at best, I have yet to get it to recognise the word Humvee despite trying every UK local dialect I can do. It's as simple as this, voice recogntion through software simply does not work very well, if it did we would all be using it every day. That said you still have the trusty keyboard and mouse so after 15 minutes of impersonations I decided I would go for that option instead. That was a shame because the impersonations were much more fun than the actual game itself. The game does not work for one very simple and inescapable reason. The pathfinding of the units is appalling they get stuck at the slightest rough terrain and even worse they get stuck amongst each other when moving across wide open ground. Games like Starcraft and Command & Conquer generals are years old and their unit pathfinding is streets ahead of what you will find in this game. There is a patch which improves it but frankly it's still pretty poor after that. I am getting sick and tired of software companies issuing unfinished games simply to meet production schedules and passing the burden onto the gamer to download the patch and finish off the game themselves. If you bought a car with no windows you wouldn't merrily drive around while they worked on sending the windows to you. No, you would send it back. Alas with software when you remove the plastic wrapping and throw it away you are also throwing out your consumer rights too.

The box boasts "No Resource Gathering and building" which is absolutely true but by the same token there is also no delvelopment of existing forces or chance to build the army to your specification which makes for a very shallow gaming experience.

I may be being too hard by basing this review on less than an hour in the game but frankly there is nothing in the game that gives you the will (of steel?) to continue unless you are very much into this type of game. If you are then try 'Act of War - Direct Action' that really will provide you with a worthwhile gaming experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Be the commander!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 7 Mar 2005
This GAME is amazing! Never before have I felt so in control... I didn't know when I pre-ordered this title that it came with a free headset, so it was a real bonus when I got my £9.99 back from PC world for taking the one back that I had already bought!!!

When playing with the headset I really felt like I was in control of the Army, but not only that, I can control the camera with my voice too!!!

This game is a must buy, when you zoom into the action, the level of detail on the tanks & exposions is awesome. I'm not going to write too much as I don't want to spoil it for you + I want to get back to playing it.

'Left right, left right, left right, left right, left right'... my voice command to the camera!!!!

    Enjoy......
