Neil Davenport, UNCUT

"the overall tone is of a Glasweigian Paul Simon, hardly a bad thing"

4.0 out of 5 stars Wee Jim's a Superstar!, 11 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I can't speak highly enough of this record. Lovely acoustic guitars, mellow vocals and infectious melodies - only a couple of tracks that don't completely hit the spot stop this short of a five-star review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joni's Garden a thing of beauty, 29 Nov 2004
It seems to be the best music these days hails from Scotland, Don't believe me? pick up a copy of Joni's Garden for starters. Green Peppers are basically made up of ex-members of Superstar, another vastly under-rated scottish band who may of enjoyed light success with a couple of singles and a few great albums, but Green Peppers don't really pick up from where Superstar left off, no, what we have instead is a very acoustic affair opening up with the beautiful title track, lovely acoustic guitars with vocals that warm your soul reminding you of what real talent is about, and not the fakes we are forced to endure by the media.
Other highlights include 'Blink of an Eye' featuring lead vocals from Isobel Campbell (Ex-Belle & Sebastian), 'I Get It' and the album closer 'Time Machine'. The album heralds a triumph
for new label Neon Tetra promising more great music and sign of great things to come. I hope that will include more work from the Green Peppers, because 'Joni's Garden' is simply one of the best albums of 2004...a thing beauty indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Big Talent., 19 Nov 2005
By Andrew Teston (Bath, England, UK.) - See all my reviews
As a long time fan of the Soup Dragon's and Superstar, I didn't find out about Jim McCulloch's new band, Green Peppers, until a couple of months ago. I bought the album as soon as I knew of its existance and I'm glad I did. Jim McCulloch has stepped from the shadows and landed in the spotlight as the singer and as the songwriter of this new project. One has to ask the question why he hasn't written the songs for any of his previous bands, because on the evidence here, he's a much better songwriter than anyone else he's worked with. He sounds very like Paul Simon and it's no exageration to say that some of the songs are the equal of the great man. Belle & Sebastian fans will love Isobel Campbell's lead vocals on two of the songs, the best of which, "Blink of an eye" is ethereal bliss. "Anything Goes", Time Machine" and the title track, "Joni's Garden" are songs that any current singer/songwriter would be hard pushed to equal. Such is Jim McCulloch's gift for a melody and a clever lyric, that it's hard to believe he's not a household name. Perhaps this album will turn on enough people to spread the word and if he releases a second album, maybe he'll hit paydirt. So buy this album if you're a fan of Belle & Sebastian, Paul Simon and Cat Stevens. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who's Joni?
Is the title a tribute to Joni Mitchell? Who knows and who cares. She would be proud of the music on this cd had she written it herself. Read more
