i admit to being a snob previously. i would favour premium labels like emi and deutsche grammophon and their roster of well-known artists.

not any more.

naxos have produced consistently excellent recordings, most notably in the field of lesser-known works, performed by names you may not have heard of. this recording is one.

scherbakov, here, performs liszt's transcription of beethoven's ninth symphony beautifully. it's a piece i have laboured through myself, so i can appreciate the virtuosity of the performance. listen particularly to track 5, allegro assai vivace, alla marcia. scherbakov, a powerhorse, faultlessly pounds at this incredibly intricate section of the symphony, picking out inner lines with seemingly effortless ease.

the recording is crystal clear and the piano tone crisp.

all-in-all, a lovely, valuble recording.

enjoy it.

This CD is quite literally staggering in its impact and in the performance by Scherbakov. I have always been complacent in the conviction that I was familiar with the Choral Smyphony, but in this transcription the limitation to ten fingers forces a clarity of the music which can be lost in the massed ranks of a full symphony orchestra. Normally I don't like listening to orchestral music in the car, but I've had this in the car for a fortnight now, over and over again and totally without boredom!
This recording has opened my ears to new concepts of music!
