5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Lovely Work by an Unjustly Underrated Composer, 20 Sep 2008
By Jason Sawford "Jason" (Crewe UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It was only recently that I picked up a recording of Stanford's complete symphonies for a fiver at a local Oxfam shop that I was converted to this impressive composer. Often dismissed as so 'much Brahms and water', I had never bothered with him before fearing that he would turn out to be
some dull and trite Victorian composer. However, this requiem is a very lovely and deeply moving work. Indeed there are times when I would not hesitate to place this work alongside the great requiems of Verdi,Dvorak and Faure-in fact Stanford's impeccable taste and refined craftmanship
often reminds me of Faure's masterpiece.

A lengthy work, the vocal writing ,which ranges from glorious ensemble writing to an almost italianate lyricism is accompanied by Stanford's tasteful and masterful orchestration, revealing him to be a master both of symphonic development and melodic invention.

The performance and sound quality of this disk is very fine and I would whole heartedly recommend this recording as a worthy and important addition to any library of choral music

5.0 out of 5 stars Proper Music, 28 Dec 2007
By P. De Vile (Saffron Walden, Essex UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a work that I stumbled on, having visited the Naxos Website and was looking for a recording of one of Stanford's better known pieces of choral music. I simply don't understand why this hasn't become better known, it is superbly crafted and full of good tunes. This performance is very good and the soloists are excellent. There were one or two times where the chorus did sing flat, but this didn't cause too much pain...

If you haven't heard the Requiem, get this cd. It is wonderful.
