5.0 out of 5 stars For me - better than Rome Total War, 24 Jun 2005
Unlike previous reviewers, I found this to be much more rewarding than RTW - the main reason being that the management side of the game is much more in-depth. I do like certain parts of RTW's system, particularly the family line, but much prefer the politics and diplomacy of Imperial Glory - aspects which really capture the era.

The battles too are graphically far superior and, when coupled with a rousing soundtrack and excellent voice acting, really bring the Napoleonic period to life.

If you're a fan of the Napoleonic era, or just strategy games in general, I'd deinitely recommend a purchase. It's the best strategy game I've played of recent times.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 12 Aug 2006

    Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Admittedly, there are some little niggles that drag this game down sightly (for example, the fact that normal shot does not kill crew members in naval encounters) and the fact that morale has hardly been represented is altogether questionable.
However, the campaign map is fantastic and diplomacy is relatively complex, which makes for a truly immersive game. Too many reviewers tend to compare Imperial Glory directly with Rome:Total War (which didn't actually provide much other than something pretty to look at). IG is bound to be a different experience, but that does not mean it is the worse of the two.
The atmosphere is genuinely brilliant (the music plays a large part in making this the case)and I would urge any keen gamer to at least give it a try.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed, 5 Jan 2006
Like many of the reviewers here I found this to be a (weak) imitation of the Total War series. Tempted by the era I bought it anyway but that is a decision I regret. The naval battles in particular are stupid - the battle is restricted to a "map" and if your ships go too far in any direction they are deemed to have left the battle even if the ship in question is in the thick of it. Since we are talking sail driven shipping the fact that the wind tends to push the action to the map edge makes this "feature" doubly frustrating. In fact I think the original "Pirates" on Atari ST had a better simulation for sea battles. Land battles are somewhat better but I think TW does it far better and without those annoying messages every few seconds.
    Verdict: steer clear
