3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 21 Feb 2006
By David Love "romanticallyautomated" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been a championship manager fan on the PC i was really looking forward to the PS2 version. The game is massively disappointing however. It appears to have been rushed. I went a certain team in my first season and won the treble, reached the semi finals of the Champions League (no team from this has EVER got that far) and my two leading scorers had over 110 goals between them. It's simply unrealistic. Teams from the nation that you are playing in suddenly become really good in Europe beating teams such as PAOK and Juventus. The game is simply unrealistic and has obviously been rushed. However, if you are new to football management games then this would probably be a really good buy. My recommendation is, however, to buy a PC and get a management game for that instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid debut, 3 Jun 2005
After my friends were astonished at my decision to buy Championship Manager 5 as they all thought it is full of bugs and no where near as good as its Football Manager counterpart, I was thrilled to find how superb the whole game was to play.
Now i had, a few weeks before, downloaded the demo for the PC which did put me off slightly, however with Eidos having an extra month to streamline the console version, i believed it would end up being a treat.
Of course, there are some things which had to be left out of the console version as the PS2 is without a hard drive, so there are not as many leagues to choose from and the player database is more limited, but still contains thousands of players anyway.
The good things about the game are the speedy processing from day to day, takes no longer than 5 seconds from pressing continue to loading the next day, which other PS2 manager games can take much longer. Saving the game also doesn't take too long either. The interface is instantly recongisible and reasonably easy to navigate round. Although there could be some shortcut buttons to make it even quicker.
Improvements that may be needed to the next installment could be a better match engine, the football doesn't seem to be as fluid as it could be, unlike in say Football Manager, or the previous CM games on the PC.
In conclusion, if you want a good solid management game on the PS2, i think this beats the LMA series or Total Club, the database, and more realism makes it stand out from them both. I do like the 2D pitch, as 3D matches tend to replay the same type of goals and the gameplay is not as realistic, however the match 2D match engine needs a lot of improvement to be more like CM4 and Football Manager.
