Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Built to impress
The commanding 7.1 Megapixel power of the PowerShot S70 captures more than enough detail for full prints exceeding A3 size and effective post-shoot cropping. A new Canon UA lens simultaneously yields hi-fidelity, superb clarity images, a remarkably thin body and an incredibly compact 3.6x optical zoom range.

Framing freedom
The focal length range of 28mm wide-angle to 100mm telephoto (35mm format equivalent) is extendable to an impressive 200mm with use of an optional tele-converter. A macro function allows shots from as close as 4cm.

Creative control
A vast array of features is protected by a remarkably sleek, elegant and superbly finished compact body. Use the SLR-style Mode Dial on the top of the camera to shift quickly and easily between 13 different shooting modes including VGA movie and custom modes. Lossless RAW format file recording is supported for ultimate control.

Processing power
Canon's DIGIC processor executes complex functions at high speed, delivering superb image quality, fast and accurate auto focus and up to 2 frames per second continuous shooting speed. iSAPS instantly analyses the scene and makes adjustments even before the shutter release is pressed, optimising exposure, white balance and auto-focus settings in every shooting situation.

Focus and exposure
The 9-Point Artificial Intelligent Auto Focus (AiAF) system automatically detects your subject from nine fixed focusing areas across the frame, keeping even off-centre subjects in-focus. FlexiZone AF/AE lets you scroll the auto focus area around the frame to select the desired subject and weights exposure accordingly.

Advanced printing
The camera prints directly to all PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible printers. Create beautiful, instant photo prints by connecting camera to printer and pushing the Print/Share button, which also speeds up uploads to any Windows PC.

Online sharing
With Canon's ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Macintosh) you can manage and edit your images. Your camera also comes with membership to CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, (CIG) your online gallery with 100MB free space for sharing albums across the web.

Underwater explorer
An optional waterproof case gives full protection to a depth of 40 metres.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A superb traveller's camera, 25 Jun 2005
By M. P. Wheatley "marty71" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is my fifth digital camera (the previous cameras being 2 Kodaks, a Canon G2 and an Olympus C-5050z) and although I have only owned it for a week I have fallen in love with this fantastic little camera.

For a couple of years I have been using an Olympus C-5050z with a large wide angle WCON-7 converter lens. Whilst this has been an okay set-up, I have found having to carry a large camera with a fiddly & heavy converter lens to be getting in the way of my travels. I love both travelling and photography but I don't love photography when it intrudes unnecessarily. Unfortunately I can't do without wide-angle photography so generally I've had to put up with a good deal of inconvenience by carrying around lots of bits and pieces in a camera bag. Previously I have not been able to buy a compact digital camera with a wide angle lens that takes decent pictures.

The Canon S70 is the answer to my prayers, it has an in-built 28mm-100mm equivalent lens and it produces sensational results. The camera itself is the most perfect travellers camera on the market, bar none. It has an excellent wide angle lens, it is compact (but not fiddly & tiny, like an IXUS), it takes Compact Flash cards, it has an intuitive interface, the pictures are very satisfying and noise-free, it has full manual override and it is extremely well built (but quite light).

If you are going on holiday and like to take landscape photography or expect to take tight shots of architecture on a city break then this is the camera for you. It is easy to get the hang of; there are no tiresome sub-menus. Although there are a number of buttons on the back of the camera, these allow you instant access to some very useful functions (i.e. manual focus) rather than have to go through tedious menus on the LCD screen.

The photographs from the camera are excellent, far better than from my much larger and more expensive Olympus C-5050z. What is immediately obvious is that the images are very noise-free. Some people have mentioned the purple fringing. In my opinion this is completely unobtrusive on this camera and I am a fanatic on this point, I usually go to the trouble of removing any purple fringing using Photoshop. There is a little purple fringing with this camera, but in fact it is more like blue fringing and therefore much less noticeable. For some reason blue fringing is infinitely less annoying to the human eye than purple fringing.

The images are very satisfying and when the vivid setting is selected the pictures really come alive and are outstanding. Being able to put this camera in a jacket pocket and shoot wide-angle photography is a revelation. This camera is a bargain and I heartily recommend it to anyone, both complete novice and experienced professional.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! (but flawed)., 3 Oct 2004

    (TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is a superb 'pocket' camera which produces clear, clean, high resolution images with a minimum of difficulty. It has a full Auto mode with intelligent 9-point AF but the user can get as 'manual' as they desire via various program modes on the SLR style selector dial. It even has a full manual focus mode with a split screen focussing view. The build quality is excellent and the unit feels metallic and rugged (it's quite heavy), just don't drop it on the lens assembly or there'll be expensive trouble. The lens retracts into the body when not in use and is covered by a metal sliding front plate so it's safe in your bag or pocket. Image storage is fast as is retrieval, although the USB interface is type 1 (naughty Canon!). The only downside is power consumption (buy a spare battery) and slight purple fringing at the widest angle of the (tiny) lens. This camera easily outperforms my 3 year old Olympus E10 SLR and produces very high quality images indeed. Recommended if you don't want a full SLR or can't stretch to one (or need a compact spare camera as do I).

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost an SLR but in a tiny package, 24 May 2005
By Rob Elmour (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
I've had one of these for 3 months and I'm very, very impressed. It's the first of the 3 digital cameras I've had that I've been completely happy with.

The image quality (the most important thing, right?) is absolutely dazzling. I think most of the reviews I've read must've been based on early versions because the (slight) problems noted don't seem to happen with mine. The flash drop - off in the corners of images taken at the widest angle is barely perceptible (it's quite pronounced on the sample images in the reviews) and I haven't noticed any purple fringing at wide angles at all, plus it does come with a set of printed manuals.

I was looking for a compact digital camera that would offer as much flexibility as I get with my bulky SLR and I certainly found it with this one! You have control over absolutely everything if you want it, if not, there are a wide variety of program modes from fully automatic point-and-press (my 9 year old has taken some superb pictures using this mode) to full manual including focus, with nice touches like auto-bracketing of exposure/focus.

If I have any criticisms at all - and they're very minor - it's that I find it too easy to accidentally nudge the sliding lens cover enough to switch the camera off and that the slow USB 1 interface means I have to go off and have a cup of tea while I'm waiting for the images to download to my PC. Hardly the end of the world.

All in all, a superb little compact camera. In size and weight it compares very well with other compact digicams but in features and the creative possibilities it offers you'll find it very hard to beat. I'm extremely pleased with it.
