Album Description
UP01-04 is an 80-page CD-book retrospective, drawn from the first four issues of audio journal Unknown Public. UP's compilations of 'creative music in a plain brown box' aimed to inform and entertain the audience for creative music: music that crosses genres or falls between the cracks: composed, improvised, electroacoustic, experimental, sound art, multimedia, new jazz, contemporary classical and world music. The UP boxes were originally available on subscription, by mail order only, and these rare issues are now out of print.
Unknown Public continues to release regular compilations in a brand new format - since UP13, they have employed a hardback CD-book format. Unknown Public 01-04 volume one contains reprints of essays by Sam Richards, Dave Heath, Clive Bell, Neil Ardley and John White plus poems by Billy Jenkins and Pauline Stainer and artwork by Unknown Public's original designers Tomato. Journalist, publisher and early subscriber Roger Thomas provides an overview.
Both book and CD were compiled by UP's founders: editor John L. Walters is also a music columnist for the Guardian Friday Review and the editor of Eye; publisher Laurence Aston represents film composers, including Zbigniew Preisner and Jocelyn Pook.
