Amazon.co.uk Review
With less drama and more slapstick than its predecessor, Disney's Mulan 2 continues the animated saga of the young Chinese heroine, Fa Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga). The story picks up one month after Mulan has saved her country through bravery and determination. Revered by all, she now returns to her village and becomes engaged to General Li Shang. Wedding plans must wait, however, when the Emperor assigns the couple to a secret mission to escort his three princess daughters across China where their arranged marriages to waiting princes will secure an alliance with a rival kingdom and save China from invasion. Meanwhile, Mulan's wise-cracking guardian dragon, Mushu (voiced by Mark Moseley), realizes that if Mulan's marriage takes place, he is out of a job and so he undertakes his "18-phase master plan" of relationship sabotage to breakup the happy couple. Most of the film's jokes come from Moseley's Mushu (as quick-witted as Eddie Murphy's earlier performance), while a trio of prankish soldiers provide additional comic relief. While the film's overall effort is not as sensational as the original, it offers solid family entertainment, healthy female role models, and a handful of catchy songs. --Lynn Gibson

4.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good!, 7 Dec 2004
This review is from: Mulan 2 [2004] (DVD)
I have to admit over the past few years Disney have released so many sequels, direct to video! You've probably seen a few of them and have been so disappointed you've decided not to bother getting any more. After the travesties that were Belle's Magical World, The Jungle Book 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and SEVERAL others, I was feeling the same and I thought things would never get better. I decided to give them one more chance so I picked up Mulan 2.

Well I have to say my jaw was on the floor most of the way through because I was so surprised at the quality of this film! The story (which I will briefly describe in a minute) was rivetting it had depth you feel for the characters! At points I was so shocked that a cheaply made film, made by people who had nothing to do with the original would be so brave to do such drastic things with the characters! Also the animation has come on leaps and bounds! Remember all those ugly off model scenes from Hunchback 2 or the jerky movements of the characters in the Return of Jafar? Well they are almost irradicated, I have to admit there was one short scene which only lasted about ten seconds that was horrible to look at!

The music also is surprisingly good! Normally the sequels have songs which are anything but memorable or they just recycle the songs from the original, but here there are some songs that are actually quite catchy!

Anyway onto the story. After being proposed to by Shang, he and Mulan are sent on a very important mission by the emperor of China. Their mission, to safely escort the three daughters of the emperor to a distant country where they have been betrothed, to the sons of this land, in order to bring peace between the two countries. After what happened to Mulan in the first film Mulan is against arranged marriage and everything it stands for, and reluctantly she accepts the mission. (See what I mean about the more grown up story lines?) Anyway the main part of the film is the journey of the princesses and the company to this new country and the obstacles that face them (Some which are what I talking about earlier, very impressive and quite extraordinary for a direct to video Disney sequel, although don't worry there are no scary mosters for those parents who may be worried). And when their destination is reached there are some even more intersting developments. The overall story and theme is very similar to the first Mulan, so if you or your child enjoyed that I am sure you will enjoy this. If you haven't seen the original Mulan although it is fit for girls as their is a heroine, don't expect fairies and magic spells.

Even though this film is surprisingly good, please do get the original first, if you do not already have it. As it will not only help you to understand this sequel better, but as I know DVDs can be expensive and if it comes to a toss up between the two, always go for the original.

Although not quite at the same level of brilliance as the original it is a worthy sequel, and definitely Disney's best Direct to video effort. Let's hope we can say goodbye to Disney's cheaply produced, badly animated sequles for good, especially now they have proved that they can do them well!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 5 Nov 2007
This review is from: Mulan 2 [2004] (DVD)
What happened? Have all the Disney storywriters snuffed it over the course of the last three years? Have the animators gone blind? In short, what happened to Mulan?

I think Mulan was the last Disney movie deserving the title of a "classic". And epic, funny, dramatic, engaging and colourful movie. This sequel is not much of a movie, but when you compare it to the "proper" film, there is not many positive things to say about it.

To begin with the story, I have to say that I find it incredibly lacking. The structure is boring and the characters have changed from versatile and loveable to static, boring and overdone.

The colourful and not to mention beautiful visuals are gone, and we are left with something so boring and at times even crude, that it is hardly worthy of the title "movie".

Sequels are hardly ever great (with the exception of the lion king 2). but this is such a crude movie, bereft of all the diversity we have come to expect from Disney, that all in all, I would reccommend you to not bother watching this, it would be a complete waste of time.

this film had me chuckling throughout, the characters were true to their originals and my three children were completely engrossed.

enough of a story to keep adults interested and really fun songs for the kids.
