5.0 out of 5 stars Grow up chill out music, 23 Mar 2005
By Ga Taylor "obscurity addict" (South Woodham Ferrers, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some of the sounds are familiar - the little clicks and electronic burbles - the vocals are slight and gently sad but there the familiar ground ends. This is trippy chillout music with a string section, real percussion, a choir and a proper sense of structure. This is electronic music with all the chilling atmospherics you could want on a rainy Sunday morning but with a sense of purpose and drama that means tracks have their own individual identity. Listen to that lone trumpet at the end of "prey and predator" - its not some vaguely appropriate sample - its a proper, carefully considered musical contribution. Here is chillout with musical chops - the arrangements are fabulous. For me its new musical find of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loud silence with a touch, 16 April 2005
Efterklang is the danish word for reverberation and is a testimony to the classical background of some of the group members, but, despite this it is very hard to put a label on Tripper as it is both extremly electronic while at the same time very acoustic, clean and present.

Unlike any other music I own everything actually becomes more silent the louder I play this record, and with its very atmospheric, soundtrack like qualities it is perfect to just flow away to and I often use it for an afternoon nap.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Dark Star, 25 Jan 2006
By Demob Happy "jamesewan" (London / Grenoble) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Much has been made of the atmospherics and wintery mood on this album but for me this was a dissapointment. The marriage of classical music and electronica is always an uneasy one - countless clinical, po-faced concept records have been made in this mould. What is missing from many of the reviews about this record is what the chief vocals sound like. To me, they tend towards the mopey self-indulgence of mediocre indie bands. Lots of unintelligable murmering over glitchy, stop-start production - gloomy strings; frenetic, speeded-up loops (as per Four Tet's 'Spirit Fingers') which are downtempo despite their speed; chimes; glockenspiels; choirs etc. The musical pallette is similar to Colleen but sped up consderably, but it is the lead vocals that lack in substance. I have nothing against the voice being used just as a musical instrument - that is, wordlessly - but you need a special sounding voice to do this (as with their associates Sigur Ros). There are some beautiful moments on this album, but I found the mood unbending and, with many tracks hitting the six-minute mark, tiring. That said, I think this an album you have to be in a very specific mood for, and should probably listen through headphones to fully appreciate.
