Synopsis
The trials of parenthood are at the forefront of this murky horror effort that recalls 1970s child-possession hits like AUDREY ROSE ('77) and The EXORCIST ('73). Inner-city school teacher Paul (Greg Kinnear) and his wife Jessica (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) are distraught after losing their eight-year-old son David (Cameron Bright) in an accident. At the funeral, Jessica's old science professor Dr. Wells (Robert De Niro) offers them a chance to rebuild their lives: a mansion in the country near his DNA clinic, a private school teaching job for Paul, and an exact clone of their dead son. Sworn to secrecy and facing all sorts of moral issues, the grief-stricken couple accepts Wells' offer. All goes well until the new David passes the age he previously died, then comes ghostly visions of burning children, and premonitions of murder. A creepily unobtrusive score and the film's drab look help maintain a welcome low-key, character-driven mood here, with the result that GODSEND works both as a standard horror film and a darkly psychological meditation on the uncertainty, misgivings, and sheer terror involved with child rearing. Deniro is great, as usual, and the gorgeous Romijn-Stamos proves herself adept in an unglamorous, tensely dramatic change-of-pace role as the split-apart mother.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Four Alternate Endings Are Worth It, 23 Aug 2004
By Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Director Nick Hamm serves up this pseudo-supernatural thriller with lots of bite with no teeth. Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos lose their eight-year-old son in an accident the day after his birthday (What? No Cop about to retire the before he gets killed?) Grief stricken, they are approached by super-scientist Robert DeNiro who can clone their child. Oh, but Dr. DeNiro has some secrets and another agenda. When the child reaches his eighth birthday he starts having `terror spells', which basically reveal the entire plot through scrappy, cut and paste flashbacks. The ending wraps things up quickly and nicely with no real suspense or eeriness.

However, there are four alternate endings that you can view! This is a sure sign that this movie was in trouble. To be honest, anyone of these endings was better than the `feel kind-of good' ending that was chosen. I prefer the darkest of the four alternates as it seems to carry the movies theme more dramatically, but I imagine that most viewers want a happy ending. Still, they are worth watching if you are going to buy or rent this pretentious film. The acting is not bad, but the writing is just short of atrocious.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible, 12 May 2006
By Ms. B. Williams "Beth" (South Wales) - See all my reviews

What is it with Robert De Niro these days? One of the best actors around does not seem to have an eye lately for a dud film and this mind numbing mess takes the biscuit. The premise of this story is a couple who's kid gets run over on his 8th birthday. Taking advantage of the couples grief a disgraced doctor (De Niro) visits them and offers his services to clone their child. All is well and good until the kid turns the age he died originally and starts becoming akin to the antichrist. "Why did this happen?" you may ask and all is revealed later on in the movie. The fact is though by that time you don't care. The kid acting in the part as the clone is extremely annoying and so is every other character in this movie. It is not in the slightest bit scary and the ending is appalling but by this time even with mouth to mouth resucitation this film could not be saved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Poor!!!, 24 April 2005
By S. Mangan-Taylor "strawberrybounce2005" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Eventhough I had read poor reviews about this film, I was still looking forward to seeing it as I thought the plot looked rather interesting. What a mistake that was!
The plot was extremely predictable and the acting was rather poor! I also felt that none of the characters had any personality and it wasn't at all scary.
I wouldn't suggest you watch this film, unless you are a die hard Robert De Niro fan!
