Inaccurate and annoying, yet enjoyable, 11 Dec 2004
The incredible fight scenes, Bana's acting skills and Brad Pitt's body are the only things that pull this movie through. With the Gods removed from the story, the relationship between Helen and Paris becomes banally simple. Their love scenes, in which Orlando Bloom seems to be coated in some unattractive oily substance, are easily surpassed by the touching portrayal of Hector and Andromache's relationship, and the steamy affair between Briseis and Achilles. The title of most annoying character is held jointly by Bloom's Paris and Kruger's Helen who, throughout the entire movie both seem to only be able manage running around looking pretty, and sniffling at the appropriate moments. Bana- as Hector, is left with the task of making the Trojan side likeable - no small feat when he is aided only by the lovesick Helen and Paris, and the idiotic and ailing Priam. Briseis, a priestess of Apollo and niece to Priam, has been alloted a larger part than in the Iliad, and not only plays a Juliet figure, but also at times seems to embody Cassandra and G.I Jane. Bean, Cox and Burrow all provide good supporting performances, and Pitt's Achilles, though at times infuriating does show the obsession with honour that is perhaps the only aspect of the Iliad the scriptwriters have decided to carry forward. Despite being canonically inaccurate and irritating at times, Troy does manage to provide a good evening's entertainment as long as repeat watchings are few and kept far apart.
