Product Description

Neither before or since has Britain ever been in a more disturbed or perilous state. CORNELIUS TACITUS. In 55BC the ambitious Julius Caesar, Emperor of Rome, turned envious eyes towards the mysterious isle of Britain. Within a few short years, the mighty Roman war machine had tamed the Celtic tribal society and transformed it into a province of the Roman Empire. This is the story of the dark years of ancient Britain when the well-disciplined Roman Legions faced the fury of the united Celtic peoples of Britain. Expert comment and analysis by Dr David Chandler, the former head of War Studies at Sandhurst. Authentic battle reconstructions and re-enactments, narrated by Brian Blessed

Synopsis

The story of the dark final years of ancient Britain when the Roman Conquest destroyed it's Celtic occupiers in the name of broadening their already swelling empire. The programme uses re-enactments, dramatised 'eye-witness' accounts and computer graphics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, 31 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I saw this some years ago and was horrified at the factual errors. When the narrator referred to "the Emperor Julius Caesar", I knew that there was a shock in store - and I was right!
David Chandler sitting and talking about the Roman short sword (the Gladius) and showing an object which was most cetainly not one with the words "this is a gladius". I can't believe he didn't know better! There are more mistakes.
I understand that the re-enactment group involved in the making of the film requested that their name be removed from the credits because they were so appalled.

3.0 out of 5 stars good but with bewildering inaccuracies, 16 Nov 2008
I liked most of this DVD. It is focused on its subject, gives a thorough historical analysis of several aspects, and the reenactments (from reenactment groups) are good.
However, the DVD contains several inaccuracies and contradictions which left me bewildered.
For example, the narrator explains (correctly) that Julius Cesar never was emperor; his successor Octavian Augustus was the first emperor in history. But the end credits include the actor who played 'Emperor Julius Cesar'. Uh?
Several experts were involved in the making of this film. Apparently none of them glanced over the finished product to get rid of such bizarre errors.
