Confusion reigned supreme upon receiving Live Encounters. On the packaging we see Deep Purple of 2001 (just before Don Airey replaced the mighty Jon Lord), with gig footage from 1996. So its back to a long-haired Gillan, whose voice is sadly lacking in strength.

I was left trying to find out a reason for this specific concert to be released.. The setlist is identical to the Live at the Olympia double album, and the sound quality is surprisingly poor. Was left very disappointed in the product overall.

What gave this 3 stars was the performance of the band, despite all of the above. Steve Morse shows everyone why he deserves his place in the spotlight, and Ian Paice is still the best swing drummer i've had the fortune to hear. Its just a shame the quality is so low. At one point all you hear is a lot of crackling.
I'm sure the diehard fans will treasure it with a place in their archives. My advice is to find Perihelion, infinitely better!
