Jacqueline du Pre's life story is well known , her meteoric rise , the great Elgar Cello Concerto recording with Barbirolli , her marriage and musical partnership with Barenboim and being tragically struck down with MS and her early death in 1987 .

Most music lovers would agree that for all the merits of the Elgar Concerto , that the pinnacle of the cello repertoire is the Dvorak Cello Concerto . Du Pre recorded the concerto with Barenboim in Chicago in 1970 . It does not show her at her best and the recording is poor . A few years back an exciting live performance with Celibudache was released . This was better but one felt that his very slow tempi were not ideal .

At last BBC Legends , having advertised the 1969 Proms performance with Sir Charles Groves and the RLPO at least two years ago, have been able to persuade Daniel Barenboim that it should be released . It is well worth the wait . Du Pre plays wonderfully against an exciting no- nonsense accompaniment from Groves . The interplay with the orchestra is at times a marvel . In the finale Du Pre is quite superb especially when the theme associated with his sister in law Josefina returns .

A stunning performance and up there with the classic Rostropovich/Karajan . An absolute must buy !
